A book with pace and momentum, a real page-turner, and as such recommended if that's what the reader is after. But the flaws can't help but stand out, and make for irritating reading:
Two-dimensional lead characters that are yet given space to introspect in ways that fail to really flesh them out.
At times poor translation (or perhaps faithful translation of poor original writing - I don't read Italian).
A conspicuous absence of sense of place. The mixed surnames of the characters suggests it may be the United States or a similar immigrant-based country. References to gun-culture and types of food bring to mind what could only be the US. The weather suggests somewhere in the mountains or northern climes. While it's no sin to anonymize the locale in fiction, in this case the anonymity is a bit too conspicuous, and perhaps a missed opportunity to add dimension to the story. My suspicion is that the writer is after a larger market for this book than his native Italy.
The notion of an elite serial-murder crimes unit that has seemingly no budget for or access to automobiles or proper accommodation.
And worst of all for me, the utterly false (or willfully ignorant) references to technology that underpin many of the clues. I'm used to fiction writers describing technology poorly or misunderstanding even its fundamentals (and I actually prefer a poor description in passing to an over-eagerness to delve into or glorify tech at the expense of the human narrative). But, without going into particulars (or spoilers) here, this writer removes us from the postulated digital-forensic reality and brings in the fantastical - but likely only for those readers who know the technology well enough. Suspending disbelief, alas, gets very very difficult at this point.
That all said, I read this book to the end, as its pace and puzzles kept my interest up despite the above irritations.

Reminded me of a Karin slaughter book. Lots of backstory. Very brutal. Had me on edge.
Only reason it got 4 stars and not 5 was the ending was a tad confusing.
Writing: the writing was excellent Carrisi does an excellent job if we’ve been together a story and had multiple characters, but was not confusing.
Plot: the plot was amazing. Six girls arms are found in a grave and one by one the body start showing up but they don’t know who the sixth girl is and they’re running out of time.
The plot, while gruesome and brutal at times was excellently done. I really have no idea what was going on and was satisfied with the ending.
Ending: while I was satisfied with the ending, and who the bad guy was, I was a little bit confused with a couple things. I can’t really get into it without getting into spoiler so….

I'm going to have to forego reviewing this per the CAWPILE method, because I finished it 2 weeks before writing this, and I just don't have a sharp enough memory to break things down. But I can tell you this: I really liked it. The Whisperer is translated from its original Italian (I think?) and because of that, some of the conversational pacing can feel odd. However, there's a real gem in non-English thrillers in that the author's expectation of how things unfold and what a reader finds satisfying tend to surprise our expectations.
The murders are grim and dark, the cops are always one step behind (which becomes more suspicious, the deeper the novel goes), and the story of the MC unfolds as the serial killer mystery she's helping investigates unfolds. You know I like my thrillers psychologically dark and twisty, and this one has that in spades. The MC also thinks she's a sociopath (no empathy), which I found fascinating because I, too, went through a "am I incapable of empathy" exploration of myself. And, of course, every character in here is morally grey.
The author has clearly studied criminology, and the afterword has a nicely laid out explanation for the backbone of the Big Bad in the novel. It's based off several real events, which gave me chills, but even when the danger feels impossibly cunning, the MC's social awkwardness keeps the story from becoming too impossible.
Overall, I recommend it for fans of psychological thrillers and serial killers. I know I'll be continuing the series, if I can find it in English, because I really connected with Mila and want to see how this cat-and-mouse game unfolds.

Started out way strong, immediate interest and a bit of a page turner, but then got progressively muddled.
I was looking for a mind hunter type procedural, and there were indications the book was leaning that way, but I think it moved away from that pretty quickly.
Not sure that I will look up any further books in the series.

Molti scrittori di thriller cadono in una trappola molto comune: credere che più un libro è raccapricciante, più è degno di nota. Carrisi è, o almeno lo era al tempo del suo debutto, uno di quelli.
Ma “Il suggeritore” è raccapricciante? Ti farà rigirare nel letto con il terrore del buio? Dopo averlo letto ti ritroverai a guardarti alle spalle ogni due metri?
No. Se riesci a guardarti una puntata di NCIS senza coprirti gli occhi (alquanto semplice per una persona che ha superato i dieci anni), l’unica cosa in cui riuscirà “Il suggeritore” è farti storcere il naso. Tenta di essere Criminal Minds, con il pizzico di pepe in più aggiunto dal fatto che le vittime sono bambine, ma fallisce miseramente. Persino Bones, la serie tv, è più impressionante.
Suddividerò la recensione in due: THE GOOD e THE BAD.
THE GOOD
Carrisi ha una penna niente male. Già in questo primo libro, Carrisi dimostra di essere un discreto scrittore. Apprezzo quando uno scrittore riesce a dar vita ai luoghi in cui si svolge la storia. Ma più sullo stile dopo.
THE BAD
Si, lo so, anche io mi sarei aspettata più punti positivi ma non posso mentire a me stessa.
Partiamo dai personaggi: qualcuno nelle recensioni li ha definiti “flat as a pancake”, ovvero “piatti come un pancake”. Concordo appieno, forse per gentilezza potrei osar dire che non sono i classici pancake americani ma bensì i “fluffy pancake” giapponesi, quelli alti e soffici.
Un elogio a Carrisi per essere riuscito a farmi provare qualcosa di intenso nei confronti di uno dei suoi pancakes: Mila Valasquez. Raramente ho desiderato stringere le dita attorno alla gola di un personaggio e osservare la vita che lascia i suoi occhi: con Mila è successo. Al contempo avrei voluto prenderla a schiaffi nella speranza che accendesse il cervello, sbatterle la testa al muro così magari avrebbe smesso di fare la emo, e ancora investirla con un tir con la patente che non possiedo perché chiudesse quella dannata bocca.
Mila, come ha detto un’altro recensioni ancora, “it’s not like other girls”. Lei è diversa, è unica. Carrisi ci prova a renderla interessante e apprezzo il suo sforzo. Purtroppo però non è stato sufficiente, 5+ per l’impegno ci rivediamo a settembre.
Stupidaggini a parte, Mila è incapace di provare empatia per gli altri. Mila ne è consapevole ed è amareggiata da questa sua incapacità. Questo dettaglio potrebbe rendere il personaggio di Mila interessante, una protagonista ambigua con una giustificazione per i suoi pensieri spesso ridicoli (es."tutto ciò che le restava era la rabbia" cos'è, una ragazzina?) e invece... no. Mila non prova empatia, punto e fine della storia. Non chiedetemi come questo influenzi la sua vita, non ne ho la minima idea. Nessuno lo sa, ogni tanto ci viene ricordata questa sua particolarità con qualche frase come "guardai le sue lacrime e non provai nulla" o la sua attitudine a tagliarsi le cosce ogni volta che si sente leggermente in colpa per la sua mancanza di empatia (cosa insensata). Perché una persona che non prova empatia dovrebbe preoccuparsene? Molti non provano empatia e non si pongono alcun problema, perché Mila si? Come questa cosa influisce sul suo modo di pensare e comportarsi - oltre l’autolesionismo?Bella domanda, senza risposta.
Gli altri personaggi sono tutti delle cartoline con poca personalità, privi di una vera importanza per la trama.
Non mi esprimerò sulla scena di sesso a mio avviso patetica è inutile tra Goran e Mila. O in generale sul personaggio di Goran, il classico criminologo affascinante, capace di entrare nella mente dei serial killer e nelle mutande della protagonista- okay la smetto.
Carrisi ci prova a rendere questi personaggi interessanti con un divorzio qua, un complice là, ma fallisce miseramente. Basti vedere anche l’esempio di Mila di poche righe prima: è “speciale” perché ci viene detto ma le azioni non rispecchiano questa sua caratteristica.
Peccato, diverse occasioni sprecate.
La mia critica allo stile è una: Carrisi ogni tanto si fa prendere troppo la mano e risulta goffo nel tentativo di scrivere in maniera più elevata.
La trama. Oh, la trama. Un insieme di coincidenze, cazzate e… cazzate. Quando si scopre che due dei poliziotti hanno fatto qualcosa di inaspettato e criminale, sono tutti scioccati fino a quando arriva una spiegazione fondamentalmente idiota e insensata.
Ogni scoperta avviene grazie a fortuite coincidenze. I protagonisti sono privi di qualsiasi capacità investigativa. E se per metà libro un fan qualunque di Criminal Minds è capace di unire i puntini prima di questi esperti bravissimi nel loro lavoro, dalla metà in poi non ci sono più indizi utili e tutto viene scoperto così, grazie a conigli tirati fuori dal cilindro per farti dire “no vabbè, ma come hanno fatto ad arrivare a questa conclusione???”.
Poi dirò solo: a un certo punto arriva una suora psichica. Basta, credo che queste due parole siano abbastanza.
GRANDE SPOILER DI SEGUITO
A un certo punto viene rivelato che Goran ha ucciso sua moglie e suo figlio quando sua moglie lo ha lasciato e poi è tornata a prendere il figlio, che voleva seguirla. Per tutto il libro, ha semplicemente immaginato che suo figlio fosse vivo e presente. Il lettore quindi si chiede cosa porti un uomo teoricamente sani mentalmente a uccidere la moglie e il figlio - no l’evento triste non è una giustificazione? E che dire, qui Carrisi da il meglio di sè: Goran aveva ascoltato le registrazioni delle folli divagazioni di un prigioniero a se stesso. Il criminale ripeteva ossessivamente la parola "uccidere".
E voi ora giustamente vi starete chiedendo: e quindi?
E quindi questo criminale è in realtà il nostro assassino, il “suggeritore” che già sapeva che sarebbe stato spiato e che Goran sarebbe stato assegnato ad ascoltarlo. E quindi Goran ha ucciso la famiglia “perché li amavo” dopo che le registrazioni gli han fatto il lavaggio del cervello. E si è lanciato dalla finestra finendo in coma.
Va beneeee.
Non fatemi esprimere sul killer che ha influenzato colui che ha rapito Mila e tutta sta roba quindi era un piano assurdo per arrivare a lei, tutto sto ambaradan era per lei.
Stendiamo un velo pietoso su questa grande delusione.

Tai antroji mano skaityta Doanto Carrisi knyga. Pirmoji buvo „Mergina rūke“, kuri man nepaliko didelio įspūdžio. Bet šita... KOSMOSAS. Kiekvienas skyrius = staigmena, pabaiga nenuspėjama, veikėjai nenuspėjami. Deja net veikėjas, kuris gavo daugiausiai simpatijų iš manęs nebuvo toks koks apsimetė. Ir tos „tamsiosios“ jo pusės atskleidimas buvo genialiai įsuktas į siužeto tėkmę. Autoriaus išradingumas irgi begalinis. Ir pirmasis ir šis jo detektyvas turi kelis panašumus, bet ir tai šioje knygoje buvo pateikta įdomiau. Dar kas man patiko tai, kad knygoje buvo pateikiama daug įdomių faktų apie serijinius žudikus ir šiaip visi tyrimai aprašyti taip kaip vyksta iš tiesų. Na žodžiu mane baigus skaityti apėmė šioks toks šokas. Ir busimiems mano skaitomiems romanams nuo šiol yra užkelta aukšta kartelė.

J’avoue j’ai eu du mal à rentrer dans l’histoire mais une fois qu’on y est dedans impossible d’en ressortir tant les rebondissements du scénario nous laisse en haleine!!!
