I was hesitant to start this book as it was long, and I don't remember buying it, thinking "I'll get through it"! But it turns out that Ian Rankin may well be my next favourite author to listen to! I loved the story, the investigation side of things, the characters, the settings, and the writing style!
I'll definitely be adding more of these books to my shelves!

After a brief discussion with my husband, he's informed me that Ian Rankin wrote the Detective Rebus books, so now I have a lovely new obsession to look forward to!

Would rate alongside my other favorites: Kathy Reichs and Tess Gerritsen.

http://nwhyte.livejournal.com/2000701.html[return][return][return]This standalone tale by Rankin is about a Scottish SAS veteran seeking revenge for his murdered brother (NB that brothers crop up a lot in Rankin's plots). The story is supposedly about the global chemicals industry's conspiracy to poison our food, which was even more topical back in 1995, but actually the real point is the central character's quest for vengeance across America, England, France and Scotland, and how it unexpectedly ties into an old and forgotten personal feud. Exciting action stuff at the end, but presumably our hero would end up facing a significant jail term for the methods he uses to deal with his brother's killers.

I love the characters and still wasn't sure of outcome, right to last page, would make a good drama or movie

DNF. After 100 pages, I put it down. I just couldn't get into it.

I read this because I've enjoyed the Rebus books so much. This book is nothing like those and more like a pulp action/conspiracy/mystery novel. No character development, implausible plot, and a premise that "chemicals" are poisoning the world.

Blood Hunt was published in 1995 under a nom de plum - I wonder if Rankin was trying to protect the Inspector Rebus brand. In any case, I enjoyed this anti-corporation, conspiracy thriller which I found engaging and well-written. It's funny--and refreshing--to read a book where the Internet and ubiquitous cell phones don't play a role in the plot even though it makes the book dated. What is not dated is the writing - and the continuing problems with chemicals and our food supply.
