I didn't know what I was expecting going into this but I found it to be very enjoyable. I enjoyed the magic world and the family that she found. I didn't love how the mother was written.

A 15-hour prequel for Roberts' Dragon Heart Legacy fantasy series. Everything was a little too perfect, but it's a fairy tale so I guess that comes with the genre.

ETA this note: why did she write a series of books for middle schoolers with a dog named after a British slang term for testicles?

Niet onaardig, maar ik zie dit eerder als een (wat lange) aanloop naar spannender ontwikkelingen die hopelijk nog komen gaan...

I dunno... It felt like there was some weird tokenization of gay men a little. Like I'm all for queer characters but these gay characters were a little stereotypical. There was also a part where the main character had to very strongly state that she was DEFINITELY straight but there was nothing wrong with being gay which was like... sort of unnecessary and added to the weird vibe surrounding the queer characters.

There was also a really unnecessary scene where they were breeding two horses and the main character felt the horse orgasm. There were really other ways that they could have shown her telepathic connection to animals.

Finally the way they all talked about 4 million dollars REALLY bothered me. First of all, that money is already invested. But even if it were just sitting in a bank account and the main character did literally no work at all, that would be 40 years on a 100K salary which is more than enough! Any conflict around how far her money would stretch just made me aggressively upset.

It was overall an enjoyable, easy read but there were just some small things that made me a bit skeptical. I will probably read at least one sequel but I'm wary.

A great mix of contemporary and fantasy that was a perfect read after a highly emotional war story. Breen’s character growth through this book felt relatable and I really enjoyed how she overcame her self doubts and found confidence. The magick and witchy/fae elements were fun and I honestly didn’t mind the training scenes or even the normal mundane scenes. The author’s writing style was easy to follow and there was something that kept pulling me in after every chapter. Her best friend Marco, pseudo-parents Sally & Derrick, and her Nan were great supportive characters that helped me become more endeared to the MC. The audiobook narrator was so enjoyable and I really vibed with the voices/tones for each character. I think this was a perfect starting point for the saga and I’m now invested to finish the other books in this triology.

Once again I read a book based on the word "dragon" in the title and there were barely any dragons. Or barely any plot, tbh.

The main character of this book, Breen Siobhan, is cleaning her mother's house when she discovers paperwork for a secret bank account in her name. The account has millions of dollars in it, allowing her to quit her job and go spend the summer in Ireland. Wow, wish that were me. The first 1/3 of this book is literally just a travelogue through Ireland, which was fine but it needed to be edited. Then, Breen learns more about her family and she ends up going through a portal to the faerie land, Talamh. The rest of the book is her training to use magic and also falling in love with the boring, kind of a jerk love interest, Keegan.

This book was entertaining enough to finish but there were so many things that made me laugh in disbelief, including: the dog named Bollocks, that horse mating scene, the fact that Breen is perfect at everything she tries, and how terrible and poorly developed Keegan was. And yeah, the dragons were only in a few scenes and have no personality.
I might read the second one just for Breen's friend Marco though. He was the best character and I would have read an entire book about him and Breen traveling around Ireland discovering themselves, forget faerieland.
