i mainly kept reading hoping someone would hit werther over the head with a shovel and hopefully propel him right into a six foot hole

Werther basically condones sexual assaulting someone if you love them enough. I get that a lot of the story elements are products of the time, but I found the protagonist to be selfish and intolerable.

  This is definitely a well written book that was very important for it's time and genre.  
  However, I have no interest in reading about a man whining for almost 200 pages about a woman that clearly has no interest in him. Maybe I would be more emphatic towards Werther if he didn't romanticize the sexual assault inflicted on a woman he doesn't even know and then proceeded himself to assault the woman he supposedly loves more then anything in the world.
