This book had some excellent advice, though it was somewhat depressing to recognize myself in so many of the mistakes that Frankel listed. I can understand while some would take issue with this book, but I choose to see the advice as tools in the tool box that I can pull out to use to get ahead, rather than an portrayal of how things should be, and feel comfortable choosing to be myself if I prefer. That said, I kind of wish it was a woman's world.

I would say the tips and advice in this book are very practical… though it contains some stereotypes which are a little disturbing

One of Frankel's main premises is that females are socialized to be nice girls (submissive, unobtrusive, quiet, self-sacrificing) instead of empowered women. So when she says "nice girls don't..." she's talking about the behaviors and habits that women may be using that are limiting their influence and career potential.

This is a book full of advice and suggestions about how women can stop acting like "nice girls" and start voicing their needs, strengths, and contributions. Taken all together the suggestions in this book would be an overwhelming To-Do list (there are at least a dozen books and articles recommended), but Frankel recommends dipping in and out, focusing on correcting just a few mistakes at a time.

I don't necessarily agree 100% with all of the suggestions in this book, but I think the vast majority is super helpful.

This book has a few useful nuggets of advice and several recommendations for other books on specific topics (negotiation, personal brand, etc.). If you do not mind reading a book with which you largely disagree, and picking out the points that are useful to you, then this book is fine. Most of the advice is horribly outdated, borderline sexist, and confusing, especially regarding women's appearances.

I was especially annoyed after the 1000th time hearing "you don't see men doing it...be like men." Frankly, there are plenty of times when men should follow women's lead and change their behavior. This book seems to give men a free pass to perpetuate certain behaviors because successful men of the past have benefited, and women should adjust to fit within those parameters and be successful too. There are plenty of other books that I would recommend over this one.
