This is a beautiful book. I have read many books about world war II and nazi Germany, but this one offers up a unique perspective of a young girl, while not directly involved in the war, is touched and burned by it so deeply that the scars will never fade. It is beautifully written and hard to put down. Best book I've read in a while.

I didn't cry as much this time. Pats on the back for me. I've just come to realize that historical fiction really isn't my jam. Unless it includes some fantasy or adventure elements. I do still love Death as a narrator and I think it is ingenious and totally necessary for the plot. I just don't idolize this book as much as I used to, sadly.

I'll always recommend it as a tear-jerker and warn people away from listening to the audiobook while driving unless they are proficient in crying and driving.

This book was life-changing. Mr. Zusak you have a talent for writing, if I do say so myself. I had to stop 13 pages from the end he had me crying so hard. The narration was something that can't be redone and I hasn't been done before. Well it might be done again or done before but not as good as this. The fact that he chose such a versatile a narrator as Death was breathtaking. Once you get started with this book it is latched onto you until you finish. Amazing, Bravo, and all other kind words could be said about The Book Thief.

Very good, but painful, as are most books centered in the middle of a terrible war. This took me a long time to read (by my usual standards) and I could not read large sections at once. Since the book is told by Death as a sort of flashback, you know from the start that some characters will die, and since it is war in Germany, you know that others will most likely die. But it is still wrenching, after you have been introduced and have come to care about the people trying to live the best lives they can in a terrible time and place.

What an unique spin on history! Death himself is the narrator of this tale and I don’t know how it’s possible but there is even good hearted humor in this book. I definitely have a soft spot in my heart for books that are set during WW2, and this book did not disappoint. I was laughing one moment and gut wrenched the second. Amazing read.

Strasznie historia mi się ciągnęła ale mimo tego jest przykro orzekająca.

It says a lot about this book that when I started it, before going to bed on a day when I'd gotten up at 4 a.m., I read 50 pages before I forced myself to put it down and go to sleep. I was pulled into the story immediately, and it was hard not to sit down and read it all in one day. The method of storytelling is unusual -- the narrator of the book is death, and it jumps back and forth in time a bit. The writing is a treat, with unusual descriptions and unexpected turns of phrase.

I will admit that I cried at the end, both because of the resolution of the story and because I was sad that I was finished with it. This book easily makes my top five reads for the year.
