This book was an incredible amount of fun, with some lovely moments of heart and depth.

It made me think back to when I was in school and my class would fall victim to The Giggles and everything anyone said was hysterical. It made me think about late nights in low lit rooms, holding hands but otherwise sitting silently with someone because there was no need for words - that small area of contact was enough. It made me think of driving along on a highway during a road trip, with the windows down and the wind playing with my hair. It made me think of the people I've lost, and how missing them can punch a hole through my chest even years after the fact. It made me nostalgic. It made me all the more excited for my next big adventure. It made me want to call all my friends together because I haven't seen a lot of them in a while and I miss them.

This book came out in 2020 and I hadn't heard of it until a few weeks ago, which is utterly criminal. Just another thing to blame Covid for, I guess.

Crownchasers may seem like it has a simple plot, and it does, but Rebecca Coffindaffer's writing made it come alive. Alyssa's voice may seem annoying at first, but it is distinct and confident, and perfectly suits the character and the plot. Now that I'm done with the novel I actually miss her a bit. If she were real, I'd want to be her friend.

The planets and stations that populate this book are unique, and I wish so desperately that I had some artistic ability because I would love to draw the locales and characters. (And I need more details on Alyssa's Faroshti jacket for cosplaying reasons.) The sci-fi lingo was easy to understand, and the references to alien games, drinks, food, etc. weren't too out there to puzzle over. I love the characters in this book to bits and pieces, and their relationships with one another. I have to wait a bit before getting the second book and it's going to be a hard time between wanting to know what happens next but also not wanting to say good-bye to them. This book was difficult for me to put down, so you might want to clear your schedules before picking it up. Think National Treasure meets Titan A.E..

I need a playlist and a major motion picture ASAP.

[I do want to say that given the LGBT, queer, and lesbian tags I was expecting that element to have a larger role in the plot, and it didn't. The representation is there from multiple characters (including Alyssa who is bi- or pansexual), but it's largely in the background. This isn't a complaint on my part, but I do want to mention it in case that's a big motivator for other readers to pick this one over another title.]

Please don't sleep on this novel, y'all. You'll regret it. Trust me.

This was a pretty solid read. I liked it, but I wasn't in love with it.

It had familiar elements, but I could really appreciate the storytelling and the fast paced nature of it. I thought the characters would good, but never really connected to them in a meaningful way. I didn't really feel upset or sad when bad things happened to the characters, I just kind of nodded along like, "O.K this is where the story is going."

I also feel like this is pretty upper YA. I would have thought this was an adult book, but the pacing and themes do feel pretty YA. However, the characters just feel so much older to me. It's a lot like the [b:A Court of Thorns and Roses|16096824|A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1)|Sarah J. Maas|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1546406962l/16096824._SY75_.jpg|21905102] in that way.

Overall, it was good. I would recommend this for lovers of Sci-fi. It's a pretty standard concept and isn't like [b:The Fifth Season|19161852|The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth, #1)|N.K. I will never not be a *simp* for the tough and cocky (but secretly a softie with ~all~ the emotions) bisexual space explorer and her emotional support himbo !! I wasn’t in love with this book until the plot started rolling and the character development started showing us the relationship dynamics, motivations, and secret emotions of the characters. And when I tell you I GASPED when I turned the last page and saw that I was at the end of the book !! The definition of a cliff-hanger !!

Alyssa Farshot has no interest in ruling her Uncle's empire. The only blood relative of a man who helped unite 1001 planets, Alyssa prefers to be exploring these planets, not ruling them. She is a restless spirit who prefers to be among the stars in her ship, along with her engineer, Hell Monkey.

But one day, she is called back to her Uncle's bedside, as he lay dying. Fearing she is going to be named his heir, she is told instead that she will be a Crownchaser, one of the contestants in a game to decide who becomes the next emperor. Though this doesn't exactly place the crown on her head, it might has well, and Alyssa is not thrilled.

So she teams up with her longtime best friend, another Crownchaser, to help her win, knowing she will be a fair and just leader. They work together solving clues and riddles taking them to their next destinations. But there is an unknown enemy that is disrupting the Crown Chase, and perhaps, one of the other chasers is not as passive as they first appeared him to be.

Overall, I found this to be a fun, fast-paced YA Sci-Fi and I believe this may satisfy an itch you have for this type of genre. However, it didn't impress me as much as I was hoping it would.

This book was 90% plot-based with very little character development. Because of that, you are thrown right into the world and the story with no context, background, or world-building, and we focus almost entirely on the action of the Crown Chase and the shenanigans that ensue within.

Unfortunately, I need a bit more foreplay because we get some action. I never got the opportunity to connect or care for the characters. I feel as though I enjoyed this on a very superficial level, without every truly become invested in the fates of each character or the overall outcome of the story. Because of that, I cannot rate this any higher than a 3.5.

This story did leave off on an intriguing note, so I will likely continue with the series. But as a whole, it was simply "okay" and will likely not leave a lasting impression.
