A fun-enough mystery with some really nice moments at the end

Kind of like watching a later episode of Foyle's War, so...not all that well-constructed, exactly, but I keep reading because I enjoy the setting, I suppose.

I will say I read this book out of the series order and still thoroughly enjoyed it. I was surprised at just how delightful I found this novel. I loved Maisie’s character and will look forward to starting at the beginning of the series so I can properly appreciate her character arc!

I read one or two of the Maisie Dobbs books years ago and really enjoyed them. I was a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to follow along, as this new one is the 13th installment in the series. My fears were unfounded. I was so glad to see that the library had this in a digital download format. It opens on the day that Neville Chamberlain declared that Britain was at war with Germany in 1939. It harkened back to the Great War, aka World War I. I so wish that my library had some of the older books in this series in digital format, but they do not. If I ever run out of digital books to read (HA!), I would go back and read these in real live book format from my library. Thoroughly enjoyable!

The mystery was thin on details: we mostly watched Maisie solve it rather than getting to solve it with her, but the character development in WWII is fascinating for long-term readers of this series

Maisie's back! I liked this latest in the Maisie Dobbs series. Although, I did feel like this was a set up for the next book. The mystery was interesting, but I pegged the killer pretty early on, the only thing that was a surprise was the motive. If anything, this book reestablished everything that was endearing about Maisie in the first few books. Her interactions with her family and coworkers was enjoyable and I look forward to what the future holds for Maisie.

So happy that Maisie is back where she belongs. I had not enjoyed Journey to Munich, so I was really pleased that this book felt like it got the series "back on track."
