Perhaps a better name would be “The Social Science of Women in Horror.” I really enjoyed this book. I think parts were too short and could have been elaborated on, but overall it was an interesting read that talked about a wide array of tropes, misconceptions, and horror movies. The only chapter I didn’t care for was the one on ghostbusters, because, as someone who actually watched that movie, the remake was not good. It wasn’t sabotaged by a male-centered gaze. That movie was just bad.

I’m interested in the idea of the book but ultimately it was like Unlikable Female Characters (a book I LOVED last year) but not as good 😬 I wanted the chapters to deep dive into the movies mentioned but mostly it seemed like the dedicated movie for each chapter was just a spring board to deep dive into other movies. It wasn’t a terrible book, it was interesting and I still, you know, learned stuff. I just expected more.

The Science… covers a lot of ground featuring women in the horror genre. Everything from revenge to disabilities in film. All about women. Kickass women includes Buffy & queer characters on how each are represented. The evil lesbian & the wimpy gay men. Then the authors present examples (like Buffy) that subvert the historical portrayal of these characters. Some of the chapters are, Ginger Snaps, What Lies Beneath, The Others, and Us.
