I feel like I’m missing something huge with this book. It just didn’t do it for me. Which is disappointing because I’ve wanted to read this book for a long time and I love the authors husband. This just wasn’t a book for me

Oh, man I have such mixed feelings on this book. I absolutely loved the writing. I could swim in it for days on end, practically breathe it in. The story itself? Leaves some to be desired - at least on a personal level. The surreal elements didn't really appeal to me. Nonetheless the book was beautiful - just not quite for me story-wise.

This book was very beautiful. I liked all the different voices, which we're each very distinct and nuanced. I also enjoyed how the story wove together. Very good flow.

"Once upon a time there was a boy who loved a girl, and her laughter was a question he wanted to spend his whole life answering."

This was one of my favorite quotes from the novel, but saying that isn't fair because the entire novel is so beautifully written that I feel as if it was one touching quote from beginning to end.

A lot of people criticize this book as being too similar to Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which was written by Krauss's husband around the same time as The History of Love. I personally preferred Krauss's version of the story, especially when the narration focused on Leo, who was a fascinating character. Her writing style is much more natural than her husband's and I was moved to tears by this book.

One of the most original, beautifully moving books I've read in a long time.

Loistava kirja, jota erehdyin kirjastossa luulemaan siirappiseks rakkaustarinaksi. Onnekseni se ei sitä ollut.
