Idk I liked the book even tho the beginning was a bit of a drag for me but it gets better in  the middle and lowkey I feel hypnotized 😭😂

This review may contain spoilers? I’m just going to kind of say what I think the point of this book is, because I’m not sure I fully get it. But I’m trying to make sense of it. To me it seems like a commentary on how we treat other people. In all kinds of ways. Frank is a foreigner-the word gaijin comes up a lot, i’m not sure if something is lost on me here as a stupid american- a foreigner in just about every way possible. He’s a foreigner in Japan, obviously, he makes himself unknown to those around him through the lies he tells, if we’re to believe his backstory, he was an outsider to his family and shunned from his hometown. He even became a foreigner to his own body (if we believe his story, which, as we get it through Kenji, he believes it anyway). I’m not entirely sure what to make of the graphic violence or a myriad of other things. I don’t want to take up too much space here though, and I fear I already have.

I was interested to see where the author would take the story after the major event that happens mid-book. I liked what he chose to do -- it offered some interesting and valid insight, and counterbalanced the extreme gore well.

I am simply mesmerized by Ryu Murakami's writing. I am just as dragged into the history, as Kenji is into Frank's web of strangeness, lies, and half truths.
