Okay so I actually loved this book and I think I enjoyed it more than Divine Rivals overall but I think it just took me longer to get invested but I'm really looking forward to cracking open the sequel

I may need to revisit this rating, as I feel I’m hovering around 4.5 stars.

First off, the writing in this book is gorgeous. From the very beginning, it was full of lines that made me pause: “He was tall and thin, as if he had been underfed for years, built from sharp angles and unyielding pride.” I mean?! THAT is a character introduction. This story just made you root for love in all forms: familial, romantic, friendship, and more. Am admittedly fond of Fey mythology, and this was such a fresh take on the magical elements. The myths within the story! Superb! Loved how they foreshadowed future plot points (will we see Jack sing for the fire spirits in book 2?

FINALLY MY DROUGHT IS OVER. After five books in a row were two star reads for me I felt cursed. I was almost expecting to be disappointed with this one as well but lo and behold, this was absolutely delightful. A novel dripping in atmosphere and vibrant characters is what I needed and is exactly what I got.

I loved this blend of magic and mystery and music and folklore. The Scottish inspiration was one of my favorite parts, as well as the characterization of the island of Cadence with its moving lands and loveable characters.

The plot was a liiiittle simple and predictable but kept me engaged and made for a cozy read. The romance writing fell a little flat for me.

But I’m definitely gonna read the second one.

Girlie tried too hard to replicate Divine rivals and it didn’t work. Save yourself the trouble and don’t read it, took me three months to finish it
