I devoured this book. It was so easy to read, and you get such a great idea about the main characters flaws and what's going on inside her head. I liked the almost vignette style and the flash backs within them had a flow that worked for me (but I could see why it might not work for everyone).

Really heartwarming and funny and sadly relatable. Well written and compelling story and narrator. Maybe it wrapped up a bit too quickly at the end?

I read this one based on some recommendations that it was a good book to read when in a depression and that it was uplifting in a neutral way. Yet I just found it disheartening. I didn't care about the main character Gilda at all and while I appreciate the author's dive into sexuality and mental health, it just didn't do it for me. I also really disliked that in the author Q&A section at the end, the author says that all/most anxiety and depression is caused by fear of death. That is not true and very different from my experience with the two.
I also thought she should have developed the various storylines introduced regarding Eli (main character's brother) as he was by far the most interesting character yet we just kept getting random tidbits of a storyline but none were actually explored well.

Heartbreaking. Narrator is deeply, deeply anxious and perfectly captured.

Also part-get-your-life together, part-murder-mystery. And life’s a struggle for everyone. Plenty of sympathetic characters from various walks of life.

Quietly hopeful ending.

This book was a roller coaster for me, and I'll admit the main character is entirely unlikeable (I know she is a caricature!! She actually reminds me of June in Yellowface in this regard). Nonetheless, her plight is very relatable and Austin tells the story of a very troubled girl with wit, symbolism, and hope. Ultimately, I found the book's message by the end to be truly really hopeful, and that's something that I wasn't entirely expecting. All in all, a fast read that inspired at least a touch of introspection -- something that I'm grateful for. Glad I read it!

As someone who struggles with the same things Gilda does, I found this book oddly comforting. Not only that, but it never failed to keep me in suspense!
