I'm still liking these but I tend to have big breaks in between. This one was quite good, like watching a wuxia moving or reading folklore stories, but also musing about how those stories get changed in the retelling and what truth really means.

Not as engaging as volumes 1 & 2, Into the Riverlands is still a good read. There is less mystery in this chapter. I hope Vo returns to less straightforward narration in subsequent books.

I love the changes in storytelling in each book — book one is told through objects, book two is told as a campfire story (basically), three is told as a conglomerate mess of stories that end up being interconnected, four is more of a story about the abbey itself (with a tiny bit of actual storytelling at the end).

This one had such different storytelling from the first two books, and I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure I was going to like it in the first half, but they got me in the final act.
CW: death; violence/injury; kidnapping

"The world is built on who carries what and for who," Chih said, settling the weight more comfortably on their shoulders. "It's not a bad world where we carry presents for people who feed us."

Why is Nghi Vo perfect? How does she weave in reflections about storytelling, feminist perspectives, vivid action, and a rich world into a hundred pages in poetic and atmospheric writing? How? I'll continue to read everything she writes.

It is well written but it was too short for me to get invested. I maybe liked it a little less than the previous ones. I will go on with the series.
