A beautiful example of the surprising twists life takes. Caroline Gardner has lived a full life, raised 4 beautiful, happy girls. But as her new life sits before her, she is unsure where it will take her. John Merriweather has spent his life on the sea, content with a bachelors life, needing little more than his ship and crew for company. But after meeting Caroline, he begins to wonder what he has missed. As they journey to pick up his new ward, they are gifted with some time to get to know each other and it quickly becomes clear just what he has missed. Proving that love can bloom again, these two quickly learn the comforts of being with a kind, loving individual. A beautifully told story of loves second bloom and taking chances.

This was a really good historical romance. I loved how it was a story about an older couple, and for her a new love after having lost her first husband. This was my second book by the author and I really liked her style of writing and the way she put the storyline together. I will definitely be back for more.

Caroline Gardner is a widow, her children are all grown up and married and she yearns to find a new purpose in life. When she’s offered the opportunity to care for a child, she jumps into action and goes to fetch her. And the fact that her travel companion is an handsome sea captain is certainly a bonus she’s bent on enjoying…
Captain John Merriweather spent all his life at sea. He’s quite content with his lot, but maybe not really happy… Could he wish for a family, a woman at her side? When he embarks on a journey with a delectable widow, he’s bound to find out…
This is an amazing novella with two endearing characters. I especially loved John, so shy and passionate at the same time. And of course I ADORED Caroline, an independent woman who knows what she wants and is not scared to take it. I loved the fact that they were older than the usual characters of an historical novel, because we older “girls” (!) need more characters we can relate too!
I haven’t read the Gardner series yet, but the novella is a good standalone as well. And of course it made me wish to read the previous books!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
