I got this copy from NetGalley and I will admit to not having read the earlier issues of Buffy. I used to read them when I was younger and before the series shifted to being entirely in comic. I decided to request this because I always ask my sister what is going on in the series, and she usually does a good job of filling me in on the blanks since she reads them.

I won't lie and say that I wasn't totally lost in this comic, but I was able to piece together enough to from what I already knew. I really enjoyed this particular collection of comics because it touch on a lot of big topics, such as the morality of switching someone's consciousness with a robot as well as the issue of abortion and having children when a slayer.

I liked going back into the world of Buffy and reliving some of her adventures and even going back to her sort of twisted relationship with Spike and seeing Dawn and Xander again. Although I didn't know much of the new characters, I still enjoyed the humor that was still present in the series.

This book was an enjoyable read, especially in light of recent events. Buffy learns and grows in so many ways, and her relationship with Spike becomes even more complicated and complex. Plus, some of Andrew's old habits die hard. I don't want to give too much away, but the art work is captivating, and the story is enjoyable. I can relate to Buffy's desire for something better, yet feeling like she needs to earn it. Slay those vampires, Buffy! I need a female protagonist with some serious feminist strength right now. :)

This one had a lot. And it had a big twist I could have done without. And a twist on the twist which wasn't really resolved. But it also had more of the cast than we've been seeing of late. And some hint that Buffy is a person in addition to being a slayer, well maybe. And even with the various jumps and silliness, by the time I got to the end of this I was completely sucked in and sorry it was over.

Well I'm pleased to see season 9 heading in this direction, Buffy is always at her best when she's dealing with real life issues and fighting the occasional big bad while doing so. I missed that in season 8, don't get me wrong season 8 was good, but it was extremely over the top and not the Buffy I've always loved. The pregnancy scare and making the big girl decision that was very reminiscent of my favorite aspect of the TV show and now I'm super excited to see more of season 9!

This the the TPB that contains the controversial storyline (issues #6-#10) -
SpoilerBuffy's 'pregnancy', the abortion decision, and the robot reveal
- which I thought was rather messily done overall, so this isn't my favourite collection. On the whole, I've found Season 9's sister-story in Angel & Faith to be of a higher quality and much more consistent with its storytelling. However, this volume also includes the super fun Buffy/Alien FCBD story, which I found rather entertaining.

However, one can't fault the production. The volume is nicely put together, as always, with a lovely cover from Jo Chen. I'm glad she's still a part of the team, because her art is amazing and it's nice that all the Season 8 paperbacks, and the library hardbacks, have Chen covers as it provides a lovely visual identity. It's nice too that the Season 9 paperbacks have an identity of their own that's different to the S8 paperbacks. Good choice.

There's also small, but nice, sketchbook/cover gallery section of Georges Jeanty's art at the end with some interesting commentary (including the story of the 'fake' cover). It's a good addition, because then it makes the collection something more special, rather than just a bind up of the issues.
