the art is gorgeous but the characters are flat/boring or unlikeable. i'm only rooting for & interested in Persephone & Psyche.
maybe it's greek mythology, maybe i don't know enough of it, or maybe it's maybelline but i'm not sure why Psyche and her family are so brown??? for context, i'm Black, and i love me some inclusion and diversity. but here, it feels like unnecessary inclusion of brown-skinned characters– unless all humans are brown in this retelling of greek mythology?? Rachel Smythe, maybe you can tell me why you chose (a lovely, rich shade of) brown for the humans, bc it feels tokenizing 😬

The colour palette and illustration style of this book is amazing. A modern retelling of the Greek myths/gods - Hades and Persephone in particular. There are lots of problematic relationships and topics within Greek myths so be wary - the book comes with a reader warning so use caution and self care before reading. As someone who has toxic past relationships I found this manageable and the way the story is told so far is light on detail with these topics. However did struggle close to the end with coersion and assault.

CW sexual violence. LISTEN. If you're into Hades x Persephone lore, this is for YOU. I really like that there is MORE to it than juuuusttt hades x Persephone. More character development, exploring some really dark themes with stunning and vibrant art.

If you get wildly creeped out by the fact that Persephone and her old uncle are a thing like I do... it's NOT going to get any better when you read this. Really, it's not.

That being said, as far as Hades x Persephone stories go, this was great.

I did not like this book. Why are all the women dressed in VERY reliving outfits while the men get to be dressed in suits? Persephone is clearly young but boy oh boy is she sexualized and it’s weird. Like Greek mythology is weird and Predatorial, we know this, but at least in the old myths, it’s made oblivious that the gods are being creeps. This makes Hot ™ and we’re supposed to be cool with it. Persephone is the main character but she isn’t.

This was an interesting start to the series. A friend of mine is a big fan, so I wanted to give it a try. I enjoyed the story for the most part, though it was slow in some parts.

I am super uncomfortable with Apollo's actions and Persephone's desire to hide the fact he raped her. His pushiness after he apologized earlier on in the book for his attitude makes his whole character feel disingenuous. Artemis is going to be heartbroken that her brother could do something like that, but it could make a good foil for Hades when it comes out. He's misjudged pretty terribly. Apollo is supposed to be one of the good guys. I'm so angry about it, it almost makes me need to read the second volume.

Not the best graphic novel I've ever read, but very much not the worst.

I've sunk my teeth into Lore Olympus as it was presented in Webtoons as a webcomic and I'm so glad to see Rachel Smythe being able to publish it and put it in the hands of readers. The gorgeous and unique art complements the tales she's weaving. It's different than most other retellings of Greek mythology in that the world feels like ours (modern-time-wise) and the issues are very relevant to contemporary time, so as a whole the stories feel updated even though those familiar with the tales can find facets of them embedded. It's clever and fun, but beware the times that the subject matter can veer into serious content. Absolutely adore.
