I found this book to be incredibly slow and a bit redundant to be honest. Also, it was just a bit too focused on SA and demeaning women for me. I know that’s a major part of the plot line but it really just got to be way too much. There wasn’t really a lot of character progression or depth beyond Auren and the other saddles being abused. The woman can’t seem to catch a break, king Midas sucks and most of the men are garbage. Really confused by the hype about this series but maybe it gets better?

Yay!  I am excited about this book.  Firstly however, I want to note a trigger warning for sexual assault and rape.  A couple mild-moderate mentions of nonconsensual groping etc, and a moderate-heavy rape scene.
I am so looking forward to book 2.  I really like Auren, the FMC.  In some ways I do get a bit frustrated with her naïveté, but it does not take away from my absolute fondness for her inner monologue and her fun banter with some other characters.  Also her interactions with others who don’t like her.  She handles things in a believable, sometimes heartbreaking and sometimes totally silly way.
“Although, I’m convinced that if they actually spent any length of time with me, they’d really enjoy me. I’m ridiculously fun. You kind of have to be when the only person you hang out with is you. I wouldn’t want to bore myself.” -Auren
She is delightful, thus far anyway.
I think King Midas is SUPER sus, and I expect to be proven right in book 2.  Although probably this is a fairly obvious point and I’m just harping on something that everyone who reads it can see.  It’s Auren who really doesn’t see.
Lastly I want to that there was an excellent plot twist that I did not expect! Which is super fun for me bc Idk if the books I read are just obvious or if I’ve just ready too many but I can quite often see plot twists coming from like a mile away.
Okay gotta go start Glint immediately kbye.

Great start to the series, I was emotionally invested in the characters and I did not find it to be predictable at all. It was also an easy read, I read it in one day and did not feel bored of it. It is a reflection of what it feels to be a woman when misogyny is still very much present. I am looking forward to see how female friendships grow stronger and what the rest of the plot looks like.

“Why am I so cursed to endure the greed of men? Is it simply the gild of my skin? Or is it something more, something deeper […]”

“Rissa, who would’ve performed and taken everything he threw at her like a professional, because that’s how strong she is.”

“But memory and time aren’t friends […] always losing one as you go with the other.”

WOW…check trigger warnings for sure.

I couldn’t put it down.  So much happened in a short time. I wasn’t expecting the story to take the turns it did. I loved that there wasn’t the feeling of knowing what was coming. Great world and character building. I’m ready for the next one.

Book had a good idea with King Midas and his prized pet, but it felt like too much and not enough. Not enough on the MMC, not enough to fall in love with the FMC though she has promise, and the last 1/3 of the book was rushed. I left the book not understanding the motivation behind any of the characters and don't like any enough to care. I'd love to see if the next books in the series do a better job of tying things up, but I'm not sure I'll read the next.

Lots of sensitive topics and triggers come up. I read the book warning, so it didn't influence my aforementioned opinion.
