I need to read this again, but I wasn’t particularly captivated by much of the prose. It was an interesting adventure, but I wanted a little bit more introspection. Maybe I missed it on the first read. I grew to really hate most of the characters, which I think is the point. Regardless, I couldn’t help compare it to Gatsby of the same period, which I think outclasses it.

I wish I didn't love this book because it's Hemingway so the chauvinism just LEAKS out in buckets like the pages have fucking pores, but I do love it. Chalk one up for internalized misogyny, I guess.

A great story about nothing in particular. Makes you feel like you were there.

The classic American novel is beginning to show its age. Its casual racism and antisemitism places it squarely in its time period, but it detracts from the power of the prose. The bar scenes in Paris and the bull fights in Spain are very well done. The third part was my favorite, when Jake sheds all of the hangers-on and is able to relax momentarily in San Sebastián.

Besides the racism, bull fighting and tiresome female characters it was lovely listening to what small towns in Spain were like nearly a hundred years ago.
