One doesn’t review The Gray House. It is best experienced.

800 pages later, I can’t quite critique this novel. Sure, there is not really a plot and it can feel… uneven… but somehow it works. The world Petrosyan creates is so immersive, the characters incredibly vivid. Roughly five characters trade off the duties of narration and there is not a reliable narrator to be found. It almost feels as if Joyce wrote Lord of the Flies.

This is not a novel for everyone, but it sure worked for me. It is more of a tone poem. A painting in prose.

I want more!

This was incredible. It was 700+ pages and I didn't want it to end - even at only 2/3 of the way through, I was saddened thinking about the approaching end. And then once I finished, I wanted to start again from the beginning... The lack of tension/obvious plot seems to be an issue for others, but the author (and props to the translator) executes the slice-of-life and slow-paced revealing of mysteries beautifully. The characters felt very real, like I would find myself just thinking about them, and the events of the book as whole, once I'd finished...
