This book has been through different stages. It starts peaking your interest with a character that is so full of herself, that you soon feel some kind of antipathy. But she keeps blasting in and being so annoying you end up liking her a bit more.
I loved the idea of power morphemes, but the part of the videogames wasn't my jam. So mixing both was not a disaster but it wasn't a blast either. I loved more the parts where they work on the power words and the magic a lot less the parts inside the video games. Or the battles. The schemming was too straight forward and the villains too vilanous but the tongue in cheek style made me chuckle a few times.

This is a silly read that nods at an admittedly niche audience. I enjoyed the irreverant winks at the mysteries of the universe, the importance of language to our existence and experience, and the completely bonkers plot line.

That said.

Despite its (rather excessive) length, there is next to no character development. All of the characters and their interpersonal relationships are flatter than Kansas. (If you're here for the gay bits, they're a stale, tacked-on afterthought. Zero stars for the gay bits.)

All in all, I look forward to see what this author does in the future.

This story was interesting, but I think it could have used some cuts. Some parts felt repetitive. The characters were okay.

You know what I really liked reading this. After a few SFF books that were kind of disappointing, I enjoyed getting fully immersed in a book that required nothing from me but to have fun! Is it too long? Yes. Is it bat shit crazy? Also yes. Reminded me of Gideon the Ninth and Ready Player One, with a somehow even more complex magic system and video game world. I think it helped me that I didn’t try too hard to understand either one. Not a perfect book, but just a purely fun reading experience.
