This book is just so ✨lackluster✨
Plot? Boring
Main characters ? Yawn
Plot twists ? So easily guessable it’s kinda sad
Romance ? Not really

YA but intriguing and captivating. I was not bored at any moment. The story flow nicely all up until the end when it ended abruptly

I didn’t love it. I couldn’t get into it. Why I didn’t dnf is beyond me. I could see why people would enjoy this. Just wasn’t for me. Not continuing the series.

SPOILERS

I’m going to start by making a Pros and Cons

Pros:
- I like that Tessa wasn’t some super special MC, she’s just a girl who found herself in a situation that no one (on the book world) could have predicted.
- QUINT
- writing was nice and simple and flowed
- Corrick and Harristan felt very humanized and fleshed out. I do love sibling relationships where they support each other and love each other.
- Tessa not immediately accepting the fact that Corrick was Wes was probably one of my favorite aspects of the book. It felt real and earned
- I love me some maps
- I’m not the biggest fan of friends to lovers (I prefer my enemies lol) but I felt that the romance was done very well. It wasn’t overpowering and it took time and I enjoyed it.
- politics being taken seriously is a plus too!

Cons:
- the beginning was probably the best part
- I didn’t feel a sense of urgency to solving the problems, it definitely felt like “Yeah we’ll get to that issue when we get there.”
- also the plague felt like it took a backseat for a very long time
- I don’t believe that Tessa single-handedly stopped the rebels from killing Corrick. That was so easy, I had to ask where was the tension? omfg that was just way too easy and the fact that EVERYONE COULD HEAR HER??
- following the previous point, Tessa also somehow got both rebels and the king to agree? I get trusting her on both sides but in a mob that’s been angry for years, there is no way they would stand down easily, especially for a TEENAGER.
- the middle just dragged, nothing happened. The castle caught fire so many times, I just imagined it was on fire the whole time and everyone was too busy to care about it.

While this book wasn’t for me, I can see why many others would love it! I’m glad to have given it a chance but I won’t be reading the next book.

I love this book. I love these characters. This was a reread as I want to continue the series now it’s all out and yes would recommend. Just an all round brilliant YA fantasy
