Honestly, after reading this and speaking to others who've read Russian literature, I am uncertain if this genre will be for me. I found the first half of the book pretty dull. After the halfway point it started to pick up and I found myself enjoying the story. It was still a difficult read, because in my opinion the story was unnecessarily wordy. Many of the scenes were overly expressive and descriptive, and at one point I even thought, "Why are we beating a dead horse?" I also found many parts sounded at if reading a theatrical script or something. Perhaps it was the way I was reading it? I like the idea of this story more than the actual reading of it. I in no way intend offense to either the author or translators.

It has been 631 days since I started reading Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky. I started on 26th February 2023 and finished on 18th November 2024 with 18.10 total hours read. It has become a part of me an it's so surreal it's over. I'm glad ofc because finally but it's weird. How do I move on?

this book was so annoying sometimes. it has an interesting premise of what is morally just, if a crime can be moral or if all crimes are immoral, etc., but Dostoevsky did not need to make this 500+ pages. so much could've been cut out, and there was so much extra detail that didn't lead to anything. i also hated the ending and how it just said what would happen instead of having it happen in this book. i read this for book club, and i enjoyed the discussion, so i'm glad i read it, but i wouldn't have liked to just read it by myself, and i won't reread it. if you don't want to read 500+ pages about how a man thinks what he did is ok and spends the whole book trying to escape punishment and trying to explain why what he did was okay (and failing), then this isn't for you
