Really interesting worldbuilding and many plots weaved throughout. The characters were all really unique and intriguing and I liked the range of relationships that were at the forefront of this book. Excited to read the rest of the series. Some of the twists were a bit predictable and the language a bit clunky at times, which is why it's not 5 stars for me

An interesting book. I spent the first few chapters trying to figure out how the magic of this world worked; and the fusion of magic with our world was something I had to take a few minutes to really digest.

Overall, Edwards does a great job at world-building and character building, and provides us a good story that is full of emotion, interesting main characters and some recurring characters, and a world of magic and intrigue. I look forward to Book 2.

Trop young adult et trop centré sur l'action pour mes goûts de lecture actuels, je pense. La partie "romance" est très légère et manque d'introspection pour ce que j'aurais voulu, mais ne dénote pas dans l'ensemble. 
Il y a cependant des idées intéressantes dans le lore et les relations de personnages (j'ai bien aimé la relation d'Acolyte et la manière dont elle s'exprime entre Brand et Rune) ou la mise en scène et des personnages que j'aime beaucoup (Quinn et Cieran particulièrement), donc ce n'est pas impossible que je lise la suite si je peux me la procurer d'occasion ou en prêt. 

Je note aussi la quasi-absence de personnages féminins, au grand nombre de 0 dans les protagonistes principaux, et uniquement mère, domestique, ou soeur écervellée anorexique dans les personnages secondaires.

I’ve seen this book around quite a bit and finally got around to picking it up. 

It’s a little different of a fantasy setup than what I’m used too in that it deals with Atlanteans. That said, I think Edwards did a good job of building out that aspect of the world and making it interesting, but also easy enough to follow. It’s never great when politically driven situations are central to the plot but the reader can’t follow the politics well enough to understand what’s happening and why. 

I really enjoyed the various characters and their range of dynamics. From the  antagonistic (but affectionate) relationship between Rune and Brand, to the much more outwardly caring relationship between Adam and Quinn. I especially liked that we get to see some characters reflect on their choices in relationships and are forced to accept that what seemed right in the moment might have made them blind in the long run. 

One thing I was not aware of going into the book was how heavily sexual assault (particularly of minors) would factor in. While it’s implied on the first couple pages it’s done in a way that makes the reader question the truth of it (on purpose). As the story unfolds that truth comes out and it’s not always to easy read. Especially since it’s made clear that victim blaming is not just a toxic tendency but a tradition of Atlantean society. That said, I think Edwards does a good job of acknowledging that trauma and not having the character automatically move past it, without it coming across too much as exploiting the situation. 

Overall, I really liked the book. So much so I dove immediately into the second. I’m very curious to see where the story goes.

The ideas behind this book seemed interesting, and there's a lot going on in this world. But I can't tell if there was too much going on or it just wasn't explained well, because I spent most of the time incredibly confused. There's guns, but there's also magic. There are humans, but also fey and werewolves (and Atlanteans, who I can't figure out if they're human or something different). There is "human society" and a second magical society and I have no idea how the two relate. The houses of Atlantean society are either named after or physical manifestations of the major arcana tarot cards. And Rune, the protagonist, is not exactly a bad character, but he kind of feels like one of those urban fantasy characters who's trying way too hard to be a badass to actually be a badass. In fact, not of the characters are particularly interesting or emotionally engaging. This whole book seems like it's not quite sure what it really wants to be, and so ends up being a bit confusing and not all that interesting.
