It's a really beautiful story. The characters feel real, as do their emotions.

I’ll survive this. I’ll live. But there’s a hole in me, never to be filled. Maybe that’s why people die of old age. Maybe we could live forever if we didn’t love so completely. But we do. And by the time old age comes, we’re filled with holes, so many that it’s too hard to breathe. So many that our insides aren’t even ours anymore. We’re just one big empty space, waiting to be filled by the darkness. Waiting to be free.

This book is beautiful. My body is restless right now, with so many emotions rolling through it and I'm not quite sure how to settle down and be calm again. It made me catch my breath over and over again.

"Please. Please listen to me. Someone listen to me.”

There are sentences in this story that are incredibly written, so powerful and moving, but this- this desperate cry, this simple, basic group of words hit me like a sledgehammer. This is what we all want, right? For someone to hear us, to listen and see us. And most of the time they don't. That's life- us swimming against the tide, hoping we make it safely to shore. That we'll find peace and some kind of happiness. The truth that no one tells you when you're young is that the struggle never ends and things don't always work out. The greater world and the authorities in it will never give a damn about you. I said words like this as a teenager. I still say them now. I don't know if dealing with that struggle is easier or if we just become harder as the years pass. This line made me ache.

A huge amount of this story is about grief and the failings of our parents. They make decisions for us that we grapple with throughout our lives. Our parents are just people, which is so hard to understand when we're young, but it's the truth. They don't know anything more than we do. They make mistakes. They fuck us up. They love us, hopefully, as best they can. Eventually they abandon us. It may be against their will, but it's the truth all the same. A parent's death is a betrayal no matter how old you are. Even if they're shitty parents, their loss will break you.

This book is about rage and anger and the things that happen to us that are outside of our control. This is a story about listening and seeing, bigotry and love, grief and family. It's about the million things that we endure day in and day out that lead to pain and joy. This is a book about mistakes and forgiveness and how we ask for, earn, or offer it.

It's about what we owe each other and what we don't. It's about life and letting go of things that we think we need to hold onto.

Reading it is emotional and sometimes it hurts, but it's so worth it. I loved this.

4.5. It started slow for me and took almost halfway through the book for me to really get into. But I’m glad I stuck with it because the last half picked up and left me very moved. An honest, important, and beautiful story.

“because despite everything, we are here, together. we survived.”

this book tore me up in the best way possible. all my rage is a heart wrenching story about the pain of the past and the fight it takes to build a better future. Sabaa Tahir is brilliant.

Crying in da club

So. There are some things I feel this book got a little too ham fisted with. Sometimes it felt a little tumblr esque, a bit dramatic for what felt like the sake of drama. And it started a bit slow before truly catching my attention in the second half.

But all that said, for what it is, it’s heartbreaking and beautiful. Community is good. Hope is needed.
