The novel is categorized as "science fiction", however, what it deals with is purely psychological and terrifying. In this novel, the inevitable third war had just ended, leaving half the world in ruins and radioactive dust, while the other half awaits the inevitable end, carried to them by the radioactive particles in the wind.
As it is the case for every other being, death will come for the novel's characters, however, its time and method is known here, and it's left to each one to choose how to spend his remaining time and where and what he is when the end comes.
A very powerful novel that I would recommend to anyone, regardless of their favorite genre or humanitarian views.

One of the most moving short-stories I have ever read. Definitely worth the short time it takes to read it.

Very thought provoking. I can not even imagine how people felt when they read this book in the late 1950's and early 1960's when the Cold War was raging and events like Bay of Pigs were happening, etc.
I was angry with the characters throughout much of the book as they were so accepting of their impending doom.
I did ultimately enjoy this even though there were some flaws and it sometimes felt very dated.

Characters dealing quietly with an upcoming unstoppable catastrophe: as close to pre-Brexit Britain as you can get.

Read this book before bed and literally had a nightmare about nuclear war, woke up having an anxiety attack. Bumped the rating up for that alone.
