The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women by Kate Moore

While very well-written, this was certainly a difficult book to get through. The first third of the book discusses the work these women did, and the suffering and death of many of them. It's certainly not for those who are squeamish about dental or medical procedures.

The last part of the book deals with the long fight for worker rights and protection from harmful chemicals. Hopefully everyone who reads it is left thinking that government has a role in regulating the impacts companies have on the environment and the people who work for them.

Probably 3.5 stars for me. This was interesting but at times overly detailed and difficult to keep track of the huge cast of characters. Many times I wondered “how much more can there be to this story?” And there was more, but it was mostly more of the same. Definitely and interesting piece of history and nice to learn about though.

This is a hard book to read, but extremely interesting! Probably one of most engaging non fiction books I've read, and the style really leant itself to people who normally only read fiction. The only downside for me is that it felt quite long, and some sections did seem a bit repetitive.

Such an important story. I can’t believe I didn’t learn it earlier.

I could NOT get through this book- I quit 70 pages into it. First- there are about a million characters that are described in full detail. Second- it felt like we were walking in circles. They think the paint is safe, then they don’t, then someone tells them it is, so they believe them, and then something happens and they don’t anymore.. I can’t imagine what the next 300 pages look like- the first 70 were the same thing over and over again. The topic is super interesting, but this read kind of like a news article for me. It’s not poorly written, I just couldn’t get into it.
