Gripping, brutal, so deeply heartbreaking. A story from WWII that at least in the USA education system often went overlooked. I had barely heard anything about the Baltic experience during World War II and this was an incredibly graphic peek inside. Educational, supremely well-written, and the illustrations pair perfectly with the disturbing subject matter.

This story shed light on the Soviet Union police taking Lithuanian citizens as prisoners during WWII and putting them into work camps. I had not previously known about this part of history and was heartbroken to see what the characters endured, especially at the hands of an Allied country. The illustrations were beautiful and the plot was captivating. There are many scenes of heartbreak, death, and loss, but also of hope and kindness. Some historical elements weren't explained explicitly and a lot of inferring has to happen for the reader to grasp some of the more subtle details of historical bits.

I had never heard about what happened to Baltic countries during and following on from WWII and this comic was a fascinating and heart breaking insight.

So good the art added so much to this. As a Lithuanian, hearing about the love for the country as well as different customs made me happy.
