Settled in for a re-read of this one. I first read it in 2011 and while I remember liking it, I didn't remember any of the plot details. Sticking with my original rating of 3 stars.

Bobby Dodge, broken knight in shining armor, is called in for his sniper duties in the Boston SWAT team. He's super talented, natch, with a secret darkness inside. He sees a domestic disturbance and does his job. Afterwards, the fallout wrecks his life.

Do you like manipulative characters? This book is full of them. People you wish who were real so you could punch them in the face. Lots of dark, depraved people here, too. People who you wish only existed in print because the alternative is just too much to bear. Crimes against kids and animals really turn my stomach, so be prepared, although it's mostly glossed over, so thanks for that, Lisa. I guess. Also, don't expect too much D.D. Warren even though it says this is book 1. I feel like this was a standalone novel that she built into a series later, and that's ok because I do like D.D.

Anyway, sticking with my three star rating.

To be honest I expected something a litte bit different when I started reading this book. I kind of like it but I had a few problems with it. My biggest problem is probably that I read book 6 and 7 in this series (and they were fantastic). So I had high expectations even thought I heard Alone isn't that good.

The begginig of book was SLOW for me. Bobby is a sniper so beggining was heavy on description which is part of his job. I had a problem with my English because of that. I didn't know what he is talking about and I had to use a dictionary a few times. But I managed to get through it!

It got so much better after that. I liked that there is mentioned and even considered Münchhausenův syndrom by proxy in relation to Catherine and her son Nathan. Nathan is sick all the time and doctors can't find the cause. On top of that he seems to get better when his mother isn't around.

Overall I like this book! I like Lisa Gardner's writing style and I will definitely continue reading her books and I already have Hide at home.

I was really surprised that I liked this book so much because from the description I really thought I wouldn't. I only read it because I want to read the rest in the D.D. Warren series. It turned out I could hardly but it down. A very good read.

This is my first book by this author. She certainly knows how to write. This is a very pacy thriller with several threads to the storyline. There is some predictability but also things i didn't foresee. Not my favourite in the way to paid out but i would certainly consider others by this author

A really good book. The story was interesting and had many twists.
I liked the humanity of the characters very much. Sometimes you loved them, others you hated them. They were damaged people trying to cope with life. What I liked the most was their complexity, they had depth. The pretty woman wasn't just pretty, but a scared, little girl at times or a manipulative bitch.
Another thing I found very interesting is that the book approaches the psycology of a police officer that had to kill somebody in his line of work. It was very interesting "hearing" the thought of the protagonist and seeing how much the event had cost him.
A highly recommended book.

Been a long time when a crime novel had me so curious about how the mystery would be resolved.

Pretty much what I wanted out of a cop mystery series. Quick read, interesting plot, and decent enough ending.

After ALPHA Reader hooked me on Karin Slaughter's Books, I have been obsessively trying to find similarly awesome series to get hooked on. Besides the awesome Lucy Kincaid series, Lisa Garner's Novels have also captured my heart, especially her Detective D.D. Warren series.

I love D.D, Warren! The first book in the series, Alone, isn't really about D.D. and I had a bit of trouble getting through it, but mostly because I gave in and learned spoilers of the end. However, Alone was a great book and a great starting point for the series.

From the second book on, "Hide", we get to know D.D. more and more and personally I find that the not only do the actual books get much better, but the mysteries get that much more intriguing.

If you enjoy dark and gritty procedural thrillers, that also have extremely well written personal stories as well, this is definitely the series for you. I bet any fans of the Karin Slaughter books will thoroughly appreciate Lisa Gardner fantastic Detective D.D. Warren series.

After the heart-stopping events of "Catch Me", I cannot wait for the next novel in the series: "Fear Nothing".

This book might have been better if the narrator had been halfway decent. She made the main character, a police man, sound like a dumb jock which colored how seriously I took anything he said or did. As it turned out, the main character was a very smart person but the narrator did not convey this part of the character at all.

There was kind of an interesting twist at the end if you believe the twist, which I am not sure I did. Not to give anything away here but there were too many things that had to add up for this twist to be believable that just did not mesh with a woman who had been victimized by a pedophile for one month when she was little.

Overall, it was okay but I was not blown away by it.
