A flashback to my 90's Loveswept addiction, this was still an enjoyable listen. The narrator left a bit to be desired.

Quick read. Outdated - landlines and radio equipment and a woman feeling like giving up her life for a man. Meh I wasn’t into it and if the ending hadn’t come at the end I would have DNF’d it. It just didn’t work for me. Elsie is the best part. And Bob the dog.

The adventure in The Rocky Road to Romance is a great substitute for a Stephanie Plum story. It all starts with Daisy, who is clueless about being a traffic reporter on the radio but determined to do so for the money the job will bring in. The more early romance books of Evanovich that I read, the more I realize she has a type of female protagonist - mildly clueless and attractive to disasters. The archetype fits Daisy well, though, especially as she juggles a chaotic life of multiple jobs and a PhD dissertation. Steve works very well as the hero Daisy never wanted. The icing on the cake of the book is easily Elsie Hawkins - who should aptly be billed Grandma Mazur the I. Some action of the story is admittedly predictable, but the book as a whole is very entertaining.

So no offense intended, but you know what you're going to get when you read a book by this author. Don't expect earth shattering knowledge which bring the epiphany of the meaning of life. My experience brings me to this novel and this author to relax, chuckle, and have fun solving a bit of a mystery. This book delivers on all the key points. Who cares if there is details that could easily be picked apart. I don't …. Enjoyed the story and the rest for my mind, body and soul … no worries

Definitely not her greatest feat. It had the showings of Stephanie Plum, inspirations she used later to make a great series, but this one was not good Evanovich material. It had some potential. It just didn't do it for me.

What can I say? Janet Evanovich just makes me laugh. Take a setting close to (my) home, a loveable pooch and throw in an old lady packing heat and I'm all over it. A totally hot hero with a heart certainly doesn't hurt, of course. This is the second one of Ms. Evanovich's earlier works that I've read and I'm so glad I've taken the time to get them through inter-library loan.

When I first stared reading romance novels several years ago, I happened to pick up a few of the newly rereleased early works of Janet Evanovich. I realized recently that I'd somehow missed this one. I now have a little more experience with romance novels, and while reading The Rocky Road to Romance it occurred to me that Evanovich's early books are more in the line of good natured self-mockery than a serious attempt at romance. The story contains many romance cliches which are stripped down to the bare essentials. None of the characters, including the dog, and few of the situations are believable, but they're fun. Several of these early works have a hero that falls in love instantly and decides he's going to marry the heroine. The book continues from there as he finds ways to convince the heroine she can't live without him. The dialog is clever and the characters endearing. Bob the dog is a hit.

The book does change pace a bit towards the end as our heroine has a very believable struggle trying to figure out who she has become during her single-minded pursuit of her doctorate, and what she wants for the future. While not exactly deep, it gives the book more depth than it starts with.

The early works of Janet Evanovich won't win any writing awards, but for a funny read with a little heart, they're pretty much a sure thing. 4* for entertainment value.
