Meh. Was ok. Read a very similar book before (First Super) that was done better. This one was fine, just flat characters. Will probably read more since they are on the short side.

DNF at around 16%

The writing is particularly bad, with over-the-top characterisation and tenses that are so mixed up that this reader didn't know which was what, when and how. I decided not to waste my energy continuing with the story.

So.

I would recommend this book to those who like adventure/sci-fi stuff with a touch of romance.

This starts off all ordinary, where we find out about the "first wave" of metahumans (the term "meta" isn't used all that much even if it is the title) and The Battle that changed the world. Our first view of our MC isn't all that favorable (as he runs tail between his legs from a woods-party because some bully told him to) but he redeems himself throughout the book and the getting of his meta bands.

At this point, I would like to say that this reminds me very much of The Flash...
Metas... different powers for each person because of DNA and different metabands (each meta in the Flash affected differently from particle accelerator)... the meta with the most powers... the fastest man alive...
Well, the similarities don't end there.
This book is also less violent than others in it's genre. While I would rate it a little bit higher in the fighting than the Flash, it has the same consciousness towards life as the Flash does. Their purpose is to capture, not kill, although situations do arise in both where capturing isn't possible.
But, that being said, this book is so different from the Flash in many details and aspects that it doesn't feel like a remake or a copy.
So, if you like the Flash (but are not expecting a remake), you would like this series.

BUT then, there are many different mysteries going on in this book like
Spoiler if the parents are still alive (or at least the dad) because of what happened when MC got his metabands
, who's Midnight, who's Iris, will he get the girl, will his "best friend" pummel him because he became MIA when he got his metabands, etc etc.

One thing I also liked is the portrayal of adults in this series. They aren't perfect, and sometimes some gentle hints from a teen will help them see the other side of the story and make a better decision because of it
Spoiler like when MC teenagerly refuses to be treated like a child and sit and do nothing while Midnight is gone when people need help, but then gives good reasons why that shouldn't be the way to go, Midnight acquiesces and it was wonderful

Point is, I would own a copy of this book... which goes to show how much I liked it (and how clean it was:)

ANDDDD, it's a first book by this author... kudos!

Meh...

Books like this make me wonder why I don't just write my own books? If this guy can do it...

For what appears to be the author's debut novel, it's a decent first try. The premise is interesting, but the overall writing style isn't as "tight" as you would expect from a more experienced/better author. If you like a fun page turner, then this is worth a read. If you're expecting beautiful prose and tight story-telling, this will probably leave you wanting.

All that said, I will certainly pick up the second book when released as I have every expectation the author will continue to improve.

Yes, this book is short. Actually no, this book isn't short it is the perfect length for the story it tells so ignore the first sentence. What you have here is a Saturday morning cinema serial in book form where every chapter leaves makes you want to read the next - you just can't leave it alone.

It takes the superhero origin story and points out all the bits that could go wrong - how easy is it for a super-powered being to very stupid and get themselves killed (and the Darwin awards would have a lot of material out of this book)? - There are lots of ideas, concepts and rules thrown in along the way that mean, after the climax at the end, you just know there is going to be a book 2 or 22.

Buy it, read it, you won't regret it!

I can't say much about how much I liked this book. Probably because I read it in shifts, my view may be skewered. It started out pretty good and I thought this would be great seeing as I want to start writing superhero/action fiction. Then after a while it just started to dwindle like a song that’s been up beat and then starts replaying this one beat that’s monotonous. Anyway, it was okay and an easy read to get through.

The concept for this was fine. The story and characters were a little bit meh, and the whole romance situation was really iffy. Otherwise, it was somewhat entertaining. (At least I was able to finish it, right?)
