The sign of a good potboiler is that you don't want to put it down. There's a lot of great setup here, a very unique setting and interesting premise, but by the latter half I only wanted an answer to the mystery and was not being particularly thrilled by the plot anymore.

I typically enjoy every book by Lincoln Child and this one was a little bit of a letdown. I don't want to give any spoilers, but I will say this...this was a lot of build-up for not that exciting of a climax. Oh well, perhaps the next one will be better.

I liked the overall plot of the book. It kept me guessing in some ways on what would happen next. What I didn't like was the monster kind of fell flat. It was so hideous that people would slacken from fear and not even try to run, but I couldn't half tell you what it looked like. It was such a smorgasbord of different things mashed together that it made no sense. What also made no sense is why it attacked at all. It claimed if someone screamed it hurt its ears and so it would attack, but initially it attacked without someone screaming. Also, the Tinut legend of it was so forced and they were brought in for filler it seemed. I wanted to like it more but it just couldn't up to the story that was told about it.

Very interesting if predictable. A little too gory for my tastes. The ending is reminiscent of Mars Attacks and Star Trek Beyond. I really can't stand Scott Brick as a narrator. I think he was ruined for me by listening to him read the horrible recent Dune books by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Insipid books with dumb dialogue read by a guy whose reading style is very distinct make you never forget that voice.

Ok I really like Douglass Preston and Lincoln Child but this book by Lincoln Child alone was missing something...specifically character development. I could care less about the characters. Some of them made sense in regards to the storyline but still most of the characters were one dimensional. One in particular just made no sense why he was there. I'm talking about you, Logan. I guess he is supposed to be the mystery character and maybe he'll be like Pendergast (a protagonist in other books by Mr. Preston and Mr. Child) but he just wasn't really connected to the story in anyway. One of the last pages is supposed to give us some clue about who he is and I guess tie him to other books but at that point I really didn't care. Even the mystery monster wasn't that fleshed out, I guess it really didn't connect to why it was killing those around it. Even the "legend" behind it was weak. Overall I was very disappointed in this book.
