I must have been the only person who had no idea this was about dogs. For some reason I thought it was about a man's journey in the wilderness. Well, the first few pages fixed that for me. I removed one star from greatness because it was really hard for me to read about the brutality toward the dogs and *SPOILER ALERT* a lot of dogs die. It's all necessary for the book, but it was brutal reading it nonetheless.
So the book is about Buck - a proud dog with great pedigree who is dognapped and taken into the harsh, brutal environment. He learns to live without the comforts of life, finds love, and then finds his calling to the wild. Really liked Buck. More than I like most characters, but he is a dog and must say I tend to like dogs more than most people anyway.

No particular reason. I would try to read it later.

A short classic. I wanted to read it because I enjoyed a children's abridged version as a kid. It's just the same as I remember it, only with a larger vocabulary.

A very short but beautiful book. I watched the Disney film with Harrison Ford and that stayed with me for ages, so I knew I had to read the book. It was cool reading and seeing the film in my mind as I read, though there were changes made to the plot for the film which makes sense having now read the book. I think I resonate with Buck a little; I think we all do.
It was super fun reading about animals and from an animal's perspective, not many books do that!
Ultimately a 4.25/5. Wish it was longer but tbh it didn't need to be longer, I just like reading about Buck!

Graphic: Animal cruelty, Animal death, and Death
Minor: Racial slurs

Warrior cats but with gruesome murder.
Buck is actually quite endearing and I think it’s impressive that the author makes you like him despite how horrible he is in reality.
This book was very clearly written by a man for men. Strong praise for personal traits such as ambition, strength, independence and violence. Buck is idolised for doing terrible things just for personal gain.
I like Jack London’s voice; I almost wish Orwell wrote Animal Farm in a similar way because then I would’ve actually felt connected with the characters.

Once again, London’s naturalistic style shines here.
