I was not ready to be devastated like this...I mean I've known about what happens for over a decade and I was still so caught off guard.

It took a long while until it got me invested, probably not until the moon thing

I remember getting this book as a Christmas gift from my parents. I didn't ask for it and it has stuck out to me because it was so thoughtful. They knew I liked Star Wars and reading so they gave me a Star Wars book. What a nice gesture!

The book itself was okay and I never did continue on with The New Jedi Order series but I will always look upon this book favourably because of the nice memory attached to how I came to read it.

Edit: 2022-01-11

Upon re-reading this book, I have to stick with my initial assessment, it was just okay. The first half of the book was the most enjoyable for me and it really got me hyped up. But as soon as our gang of heroes trot off to visit Lando, the narrative for me ground to a dead halt and had a very hard time coming back. The ending was exciting but half of this book drags and drags. I bought the entire "New Jedi Order" series at a used book sale and I am looking forward to diving headfirst into this series over the course of 2023, but this first entry turned out be a mixed bag.

Salvatore takes a lot of chances, many stretching boundaries of what I’m willing to swallow… it’s definitely the most ambitious SW novel I’ve read, and it doesn’t fall flat!

Wrote a review of this for a class, so what the hell here it is...

Set 26 years ABY (After Battle of Yavin), Vector Prime sets a politically strained New Republic (and everyone else in the galaxy) against the extragalactic Yuuzhan Vong, a ruthless race hell bent on conquest and destruction. Luke has married Mara Jade and heads the new Jedi order, Han and Leia are married with 3 (Jedi) children of their own, and they are all tested to the limits against the relentless new enemy. The Yuuzhan Vong are excellent (horrific?) bad guys and Salvatore gives us well developed characters in difficult situations. Great start to a great (if harrowing) series.

Beyond the 100 words I was limited to for my assignment, I wish to add: if you are just starting the Star Wars Expanded Universe, don't start here! Too much backstory to be learned. Poke about in the first 20 years ABY, enjoy some BBY and Old Republic books to get historical background. Cruise around Wookieepedia - http://starwars.wikia.com/ - (you might want to stay away from synopses of novels though). Starting this series is starting a long saga of trials and tribulations for our good old tried and true Star Wars crew, best taken with a good appreciation for the overarching storyline of the Expanded Universe. Or just go for it, whatever, read what you want!

Before I start in on this book, I want to note something good about this book. Namely, it had some interesting new concepts introduced into it, mainly with the technology of the Yuuzhan Vong and how it had been created through the breeding of species into living devices instead of building machines.

However, the book is a poster child of "great idea, poor execution." The writing was awful. It felt very cringey to read. The author had way too many clauses interjected within each other, which made for a very confusing experience while reading the book. This compounded with the relatively vague descriptions of fighting and flying scenes that made it difficult for me to personally visualize the scenes as the author might have intended.

Most importantly, however, was the overall corniness of the writing. And I don't mean this in the normal way of extended universe writing that is usually present in Star Wars books, such as the use of the Force as a sort of shortcut to advance the plot (though that is present here, too). I mean this in the sense of the author overusing tropes, cliches, and concepts that are established within Star Wars that the author seems to not have a full understanding of, making it seem like a cheap trick every time some character displays an attitude or action normally considered to be normal of that person.

I looked forward to reading this for such a long time, and now that I have finally read it, I must admit that I am disappointed in this book that seems to have been so highly valued by Star Wars fans. It has some notable events within the book which might make it worth reading, but a fan can just turn to Wookiepedia for those, instead. If someone wants to read this book for the experience of reading a Star Wars book, I would not recommend it.

An amazing start to, what I hope to be, an amazing saga.
