The story revolves around twin sisters set in the backdrop of a village in India. The story takes a turn when their mother passes away.

What i liked about this book is that it deals with patriarchy, mental illness and relationship between sisters. As you are reading this book, there would be parts where you will be happy, some where you are angry, disappointed and frustrated. It’s a whirlwind of emotions. Phew!

I also liked the relationship between the sisters. They are able to feel what happens to each other despite being apart. That was beautifully depicted in this book.

I enjoyed reading the relationship between Vishnu and Asya; however, i felt it was a little short and superficial. I expected more though.

This book is so authentically, yet carefully written. It navigates some exceptionally heavy topics and therefore will have a number of trigger warnings, but Puja takes care of and stays sensitive to her reader. Nevertheless, please check content warnings because the subject matter is heavy.

Amla and Asya are sisters, twins, bound not only by blood but by heart, and that special connection that twins are often said to have. They live a harsh life in their small village in rural India, but they are bright and beautiful, and above all, hopeful and driven. So driven that even when their world and home fall apart, they depart together to make a better life for themselves. Unfortunately, as in so many countries, young and trusting women end up in horrible circumstances, and this occurs when the sisters put their trust into the wrong people.

Their struggles are raw, heartbreaking and devastating. There is no other way to put it… when they are separated my heart literally sank. As many incredible women have before, the drive and the brilliance that we see sparked in them as children finds room to burn brighter as they are helped by unlikely allies to pursue their passions. Asya’s poetry adds a hauntingly beautiful depth to the story and yet allows the reader to pause and take in its significance.

The strength they carried through their horrific trials was inspiring, the love they shared exceptional and the bond unbreakable.

What a beautiful read. I would HIGHLY recommend it.
