This was a great read. Well-written with an interesting perspective. I'm so glad I found out about the author and now want to read her 2 other books!

An educational read, puts you in the perspective of a woman with a very different sensibility and perspective than most Americans have. The ending left me sad, but not everything has a happy one.

An interesting look at a marriage between an American man and a Bangladeshi woman formed through an Internet dating website. The plot's turning points were fairly obvious and the ending dragged, but it's still a book worth reading. Amina, the Bangladeshi wife, is a complex character.

tough to review. this author did an immense amount of research, and approached the subject matter carefully/with respect. i appreciate that. there are some awkward moments - there is a snippet where two bangali men speak to one another openly, in the presence of their wives & daughters, about the gendered violence against women committed during the war. i doubt any bangali author would write it that way, because it wouldn't happen.

in general i find this sort of narrative heartbreaking but human. there are a lot of conflicted reviews about this book & to those i say: i don't think you get it, but i don't think the author entirely does either. nonetheless a very delicate piece of fiction.

3 stars - It was good.

Favorite Quote: It seemed incredible that it could be the same road, the same asphalt, that they had traveled so many times together. You thought that you were the permanent part of your own experience, the net that held it all together—until you discovered that there were many selves, dissolving into one another so quickly over time that the buildings and the trees and even the pavement turned out to have more substance than you did.

First Sentence: She hadn’t heard the mailman, but Amina decided to go out and check.

2.5 stars. I listened to this one and thought the reader, Mozhan Marno, did a beautiful job. This book had a lot of promise but it didn't quite live up to my initial expectations. Freudenberger does well describing the cultural differences between the characters and even though quite a bit goes on, the story still seems to plod along a bit. Overall it was fine, but not worth recommending.
