David Sedaris usually has me giggling in bed, late at night next, to my sleeping partner. This essay was no exception.

I listened to Themes and Variations during the 2020 lockdown. This grouping of short stories was just the ticket to get me out of whatever anxiety I was feeling that day. Like all of David Sedaris’ books, I was laughing out loud and the time passed quickly without me noticing it. I’ll also note that David Sedaris narrates all his own works and therefore should always be listened to as I feel it enhances the experience. As always, David Sedaris’ unique wit and humor shine on the page and do not disappoint.

A very tiny strange little thing about the patterns and themes as Sedaris talked to people in signing lines across some book tours. Entertaining enough for a very short time, but I probably wouldn't have given it any more of my attention than about 20 pages.

Not his very best essay, but I think this is definitely in the upper third. I was surprised that ‘objects stuck in rectums,’ had not appeared earlier in Sedaris’s writing. It’s a pretty easy target and he used great restraint in holding off this long.
