Everyone knows about Burton and Speke but Bombay was just an afterthought until this book.

Ms Millard has produced a will written and researched tome about the search for the source of the Nile. Its also a study of British exploration in the 1850s and the inherent troubles with the huge personalities of Burton and Speke.

I will definitely be purchasing the hardback version of this.

A huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital version in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

There was less about the betrayal and the search than I expected. It seemed more so about the different characters and their particular habits and personalities. Less about the adventure and mystery, which is what I was expecting.
It was okay but not great and wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless they specifically wanted to read about the specific men.

Candice Millard is a great researcher and storyteller, but I found this story in particular lacking. The two main characters, Richard Burton and John Speke, are so deeply flawed that it was difficult to care about them or their exploration of the Nile. I feel as though the author missed an opportunity to write more about Africa and the Nile itself or an individual who has been lost to history like Sidi Mubarak Bombay who was overshadowed by these two lackluster explorers.

Really well written nonfiction, great for old English majors and fans of history.
