The bits in between pointless world-building lore and songs are good. Glad a woman finally showed up and did something (yay Eowyn!). Not sure where they are for the rest of the story though. And couldn't help feeling that the appendices in my edition were more interesting than a lot of the actual story.

It was a whole journey that story, and im glad i finally took it - glad i took it when i could understand, too. Im pretty sure 17 years old me would have been unhappy with that story, but neary 32 years old me is rather delighted.
I think i can now say i get why this story is such a big deal. Like, ok. Makes sense.

I had read 75% of this book before, but had never finished it to the end until now. As I suspected I would, I prefer the ending of the book over the end of the movie. I also realized that, while I like these books, I'm not as die-hard a fan of LOTR as many other readers. I still appreciate that Tolkien is an excellent writer, but I did not feel the same sense of love for this series as I do for Harry Potter. I'm still not a fantasy reader by nature, but I am glad I have finally finished the trilogy.
