Somewhat predictable story but well written with solid world building. The on again off again romantic interest felt kind of tacked on and random. Looking forward to book two.

The atmosphere and magic system sounded so great but I just didn't like the writing or the characters. It was becoming a chore to make myself read this, so I'll just have mercy on myself and move on.

Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for this arc. I really enjoyed this book. It is an epic fantasy and I am looking forward to a sequel.

In a community that prides itself on its ability to use magic that stems from drinking the tea made from an ancient Misra tree, Imani is a sworn member of the protectors. She is a member of the Shields, who are tasked in protecting her people from all sorts of monsters out in the sands. Her brother Atheer went missing and was presumed dead for some time, before some evidence of his survival comes to light and Imani is tasked to seek him out. This takes her on a journey across the perilous sands with her nemesis Taha and his crew, aided by a Djinni she has bound to her blade and claims to know Atheer's location.

Personally, I could not get into this book. It is very slow and comes across as 1D to me. I didn't fall in love with any of the characters and the character growth didn't wow me. The storyline had so much untapped potential and sounded like it would be right up my alley but unfortunately it just wasn't very gripping.

I was skeptical about this. I have a fairyloot edition which is in all honesty the most beautiful book I have ever seen. It came with a letter from the author and her letter was so moving I thought I'd give it a try.

I really wish the next book was available to read immediately. Why do I feel they're somehow related to qayn. I didn't love Imani, I did think her view of everything was so privileged and she couldn't see what life was like for her people at all. Taha I feel a redemption. Is he so bad!? No. He is clearly a victim of circumstances and abuse. I fully support his character, he sees the true sahir which isn't this wonderful place it's full of injustice which I'm hoping he returns to amend in the end.

Please don't like Qayn betray them. I full support his journey and he's so interesting. There's a while story here waiting for us to unravel.

Please release the next book soon, please let me have another beautiful copy of it.
