This is definitely a regency-era romance with some fantasy elements sprinkled in, but it leans more hist. romance to me. Suspend a little disbelief on the connection of this world and faeries - you just gotta go with it. There's also a slight mystery plotline happening at the same time. Something about the overall plot didn't quite click with my to really hold my interest.

Dora reads as neurodivergent to me, and I did like the ending when it came to her curse - how she didn't really need to change at all.
Elias was a perfectly fine love interest, I was endeared to him by the end.
I really fell in love with Albert as a side character and I'm not sure if we'll see more of him. Though my copy had a little prequel short-story about him and Elias in the war time.

This was literally so adorable. I think this is the sort of novel that lends itself well to being read in a confined space, like a plane. The pace felt rushed at times (especially the end) but that speed does wonders for my waning attention span. I had this downloaded on my Kindle but had completely forgotten anything about it so I truly began reading this blind. It took no time for me to be charmed by the world Atwater created. Despite doing minimal world building (actual English history doing the brunt of the heavy lifting) there is something so distinct about the atmosphere of this book. And I absolutely adored the feeling her writing brought me. Dora may not have any emotionality left but while reading this I felt it all: happiness, sadness, confusion, rage, and most importantly the giddiness that follows reading about a budding couple. I quite liked Albert in the beginning so I was sort of miffed that
Elias was obviously set up to become the love interest.
At some point the brooding-bad-first-impression—male-lead must be put to rest but I’m so glad it wasn’t before this book was written. By the end
I had also fallen fully for the Lord Sorcier.

This was so stinking cute and of good quality??? I thought it would be way more poorly written but it was actually well done and super engaging. My only tiff is that Dora was quite autistic coded but she lost half her soul to the Fae... Which is a bit icky when you think about some autitic stereotypes...

What a surprise that I enjoyed this so much! The combination of historical and fantasy elements is quite well-written in this book. I particularly liked everything about the ball, the royals, etc.; it was so fascinating and depicted in a very flowery and beautiful manner throughout. The romance, though it did not dominate the plot, maintained its excitement. It was so cute and lovely in how it described their relationship. Even though I liked all of these aspects, I found the fantasy elements somewhat hazy. I mean, there were fairies and magic, but somehow they did not feel vibrant within the plot, even though they were clearly connected to the storyline. Additionally, the book was short, so I didn't see much detail regarding the main characters. But beside all of that, I still very much adore this book. It was such a fun read, and I would definitely consider reading others from the series.

“I have known many human beings with a full soul to their name who do not have half so much compassion or practicality as you.”

Half a Soul was such a whimsical, funny book and the perfect blend of Fantasy, Romance and Historical Fiction! The story follows Theodora 'Dora' Ettings, a woman with only half a soul who's lacking a sense of what's appropriate. Ever since a fae almost stole her away, she has been struggling to feel strong emotions. When she accompanies her cousin Vanessa to the London Season, Dora has little hope of snaring a husband. Her aunt is determined to keep her on the sidelines where she can't embarrass anyone and Dora knows her condition makes it hard to navigate polite society. I absolutely loved Dora, she was such an endearing and unintentionally funny character. Despite struggling to feel emotions in the moment, she's still compassionate and more accepting than most people.

I loved the strong bond she shared with her cousin Vanessa, who has always been her champion and doesn't mind her strangeness. Others aren't so kind and Dora still feels the weight of rejection and being told that she's defective. I also loved her developing friendship with Albert, a young physician who lost an arm in the war. His family has a good standing in society, but most people overlook him for his brothers because of his disability. He was so kind and warm towards Dora and his best friend Elias, it was impossible not to like him! The ending was touching
because the other Dora stayed in Faerie to save them. Instead of trying to reunite with each other, Dora is still missing half her soul but has accepted herself. Elias and her friends love her for who she is and I liked the message that Dora didn't need to be 'fixed' in order to have her happy ending.

The romance swept me away!! In London, Vanessa is determined to help Dora regain her soul and consults the Lord Sorcier. Elias Wilder is a grumpy magician, who doesn't care for polite society and often drives others away with his brash words. His only friend is Albert, whom he fought in the war with. Dora is of course immune to his rudeness and attempts to drive her away, as she's not easily offended. It was so funny to see her rile up and bicker with Elias, they were truly a great match! He decides to help her regain her soul, as he knows a lot about magic and the Fae. Dora never had any hopes of being courted, but can't help growing closer to Elias, especially once she sees his hidden kindness! Overall, this was just such a funny, charming Romance and I had such a good time!

“There is such a thing as evil in this world,” Elias told her quietly. “It does not help to look away from it. It does not even help, necessarily, to look at it.” His fingers brushed through her hair, and she shivered. “But sometimes, when you cannot force the world to come to its senses, you must settle only for wiping away some of the small evils in front of you.”

Best book of this year so far! I’d heard many good things about it on BookTube, but it supremely exceeded my expectations. If you like Pride and Prejudice and Emily Wilde’ Encyclopaedia of Faeries, you will love this book. I will be reading the other two books in the series as soon as I can.
