I understand why this book has been so lauded and recognized - it’s a work of art by Walker. Art that paints a picture of pain, suffering and human spirit. It is vivid and raw. I am just still in my own thoughts here about it, will need to sit with it awhile!

Having never watched the movie, I went into this one only knowing it's going to be a tough story about BIPOC feminism and empowerment. It was that, for sure, but it was also a meditation on life and everything painful and beautiful.
Walker's characters are so relatable I felt I had truly stumbled upon a real collection of letters. These letters are simple, heartbreakingly honest, and so, so powerful. I feel that no summary would do them justice, but I can say that I was so captivated that I read them within 24 hours. I don't think Walker's words will leave my mind. It was instantly one of my favourite books of all time. I know I'll be coming back to it time and time again.
Don't wait to read this one. It'll fill your head and your heart. It's sad, it's funny, it's important, and it's surprisingly uplifting and optimistic in the end. As an additional note, I had the opportunity to listen to Alice Walker's own audio narration of the story, and wow, what a remarkable experience. I'd definitely recommend listening to this production, if it's available to you.
