This is one of my favorites in the series so far! Not only does it take place in Italy and provide a fun-to-read holiday vibe and premise, there is so much development of the relationships in the book, especially between Ruth and Nelson and Michelle, that the mystery is *almost* superfluous.

And finally, FINALLY, there is acknowledgement by Ruth that "...fat is a feminist issue. Just because she doesn't conform to society's ideal of what a woman should look like, it doesn't mean she should feel ashamed, she should celebrate her curves." It's about damn time, Griffiths! Unfortunately, this early recognition doesn't stop further internal and external negative commentary on Ruth's weight.

The ending is tragic (the only part I didn't like, as it eliminates some of the tension built up through the series) and leaves much up in the air so I'm eager to start the next one!

The Dark Angel ,#10 in the Ruth Galloway series.
This book is set in summer hot Italy ; Ruth is invited to chime in on a dig by a former Italian fling. She is taking Shona and the kids along for a mini vacation. The dig was a minor point, most of the story is taken up with the drama between Ruth and Nelson. This was good, but a definite detour from Griffiths' usual style.

The mystery definitely took a backseat to the Ruth-Nelson-Michelle-Tim storyline. Lots of lose ends and unused potential in the storyline. I'll continue to read the series because that's how I roll...but it might be time to wrap up this series.

"Dr Ruth Galloway is flattered when she receives a letter from Italian archaeologist Dr Angelo Morelli, asking for her help. He's discovered a group of bones in a tiny hilltop village but doesn't know what to make of them. It's years since Ruth has had a holiday, and even a working holiday to Italy is very welcome! So Ruth travels to Fontana Liri, accompanied by her daughter Kate and friend Shona. In the town she finds a medieval shrine and a dark secret involving the war years and the Resistance. To her amazement she also finds Harry Nelson, who is enduring a terrible holiday at a resort nearby. But there is no time to overcome their mutual shock - the ancient bones spark a modern murder, and Ruth must discover what secrets there are in Fontana Liri that someone would kill to protect."

Not too bad if a little unreal in the plot, and it’s interesting to see the continuing story of Ruth & Nelson, characters I like. There were a couple of typos in the ebook I had, never a good thing.

I am always so impatient for these mysteries—I love Ruth and Kate and Nelson and Cathbad. I especially loved going to Italy for this latest novel. Received at ALA Midwinter 2018.

I’m still enjoying this series and the characters. In this one we briefly get a POV of someone new which was very interesting.

While I enjoy Ruth and the story. I am just about done with Nelson and his storyline. It just gets more annoying and unbelievable in every book.
