A short while ago (my book read before last) I wrote a review of James Rollin's novel 'Altar of Eden'. In it, I stated that I found Rollins to be a bit hit and miss, with that particular novel falling somewhere between the two camps. If that was the case, then 'Ice Hunt' also belongs alongside 'Altar of Eden': alongside, but closer to the 'hit' side of things than to the 'miss'.

A bit predictable in parts, this one maintains a faster pace right from the off than the previously mentioned novel. I also read another review on GR that states that this is a pre Sigma novel: if that is the case, it is easy to see the influences this one has on those later(?) works.

Would have been lower but the very end was a gut punch.

Very slow until about 3/4 of the way through. The ending was very exciting though.

Really enjoyed this one. Might be my favourite Rollins book. This is a standalone story, apart from the SIGMA Force and Banned and Banished novels, with the exception of an appearance of a lone SIGMA Force character. You will recognize this character if you have read the SIGMA Force novels through book 4. Another great combination of thriller, science and science fiction.

Started today March 1st., 2013.
Good paced, a bit too much action and not enough time to rest.
A few nice twists, but one I guessed early on, could have done better. More realistic than some other books by Rollins, and nearly in the same league as a lot of Douglas Preston / Lincoln Child (both their collaborations and their single authored books).
Good idea for once a story which starts shortly before the WW2 without Nazis, and listing atrocities of other countries.
High body-count.
For some reason it was not a total page-turner for me, maybe too much action and no peace?
Due to the timeline, the main characters went without sleep for most of the story, which adds to me to the feeling, a few pauses in between would have been more realistic, stopping for sleep. For that and a bit too much action only 4 stars.

A very enjoyable book hard to put down. Yes, the plot is about the same thing as usual, and you won't find any psychological depth or philosophy or whatever but, let's admit it, a book can be highly amusing even without those :) When you feel like you don't want your mind to be overloaded with beautiful writing or complicated ideas, take a nice thriller like the ones that Rollins writes and just enjoy a whirl of action. It's not a novel - it's a text movie. One event after another, danger, deaths, love affairs, mystical events, impossible encounters, incredible animals - you will find all the elements of a most pleasant action/thriller movie in there. So let's not be too critical. Literature is not only about one's spiritual development, it's also about having fun! :) I know that other Rollins books will be similar to what I have already read, but I don't mind - I want to read them anyway, they are plain exciting :)

I can see a development in the stories that improves with time. It takes a lot of time to develop new characters for each book. Of course, serials can avoid this by establishing in the beginning stories. Overall, a good book that just takes a bit to get into.
