I would like to begin this by stating I had watched the tv series before reading this comic.
The comic itself is decent, and the artwork is ok but nothing mind-blowing. Overall it is very average and mostly just a starting volume. All that it does is introduce characters but has very little plot other than the main mystery that occurs but even that takes a back seat to introducing characters. It is more interesting to compare the comic and the show than it is to simply read the comic. The artwork feels aged, the hairstyles remind me of the early seasons of NCIS, and the heavy lineart is very early 2000s in style. I am hoping it gets better from here.

This is extraordinarily well-written, with possibly one of the best examples of minimalist dialogue I’ve seen all year, but it lacks punch. It’s so good but doesn’t really seem to be *about* anything. The fact that Doc is a space alien is completely immaterial to this story, which feels like a huge missed opportunity. If you can replace your main character with anyone else and the story still works, you’ve kind of gone too far into the generic side of the equation.

Similarly, the art is fantastic. It’s not showy but rather cleanly and simply tells the story with no fuss. That’s a skill not many comic book artists have.

The story was a tiny bit predictable, but it was still quite entertaining and I would like to read more! I'll be looking for the next volume to continue soon.

Started watching the TV show and saw in the opening titles it was based on a comic book. Got this volume from my library to compare and I have to say... I like the show better. When I see the movie/show first I do tend to like it better vs reading the book first I tend to like that. But as cringy as the show can be sometimes, it's added depth to a lot of the characters and added in more diversity in the cast, deepened Harry's species details and personality, and just given a degree of humor I don't think would be possible in a graphic novel medium. Certainly the Harry in the comic is much more competent at being human, but a lot of the fun of the show is watching Harry being a total idiot. Curious enough to read the second volume but, at the moment, definitely more likely to continue on with the show.

Resident alien is about a crash landed alien who assumes a new, normal human identity in the Pacific Northwest. Part mystery, part slice of life, this has been made into a tv show featuring Alan Tudyck.
I read volume one, and can say it’s grounded in reality, apart from the alien character/subplot. While he’s only been on the Earth for three years, he’s being hunted by a government agency.
There’s a cool story in volume one, involving our favorite alien trying to solve the murder of a small town doctor—whose job he is now responsible for, and his interactions within the town. He fell in love with mysteries, especially noir, and enjoys solving them on his own, but he’s working with a coworker.. I look forward to more in the series AND the show!
