extremely thorough but manages to be engaging, not dry (at least in the first half or so - afterwards, becomes the infuriating inaction and complicity becomes a bit repetitive from a narrative perspective, but this *is* a nonfiction book after all, so that's hardly a fair complaint

Highly awaited book based on brand new access to the Vatican archives.
Definitely didn't make this reader feel that Pius XII deserves to be canonized.
Also more examples on how non-democratic leaders use religion to take advantage of the credulous.
Some parts were a little tedious but mostly those that reflect the Pope's tortured path of decision making and writing.
