Een ontroerend, aangrijpend, boeiend en indrukwekkend verhaal over de in hun jeugdjaren ontstane vriendschap tussen de Engelse Skye Penrose en de Amerikaanse Nicholas Crawford, die tijdens de oorlogsjaren - wanneer Skye werkt als piloot voor de ATA (Air Transport Auxiliary) en vliegtuigen naar militaire bases transporteert, terwijl Nicholas in dienst van de Royal Air Force geheime nachtvluchten op Frankrijk uitvoert om materiaal en speciale agenten t.b.v. het Franse verzet te droppen en mensen op te pikken voor terugkeer naar Engeland - uitgroeit tot een ogenschijnlijk onmogelijke maar onverbrekelijke liefde. 4½ ster
Enige kanttekening:
Ik begrijp niet hoe Kat Jourdan in haar capaciteit van museum-modeconservator na de ontdekking van een buitengewoon exclusieve serie Dior-creaties (65 nooit gedragen stuks, een uit de collectie van elk jaar, van 1947 tot 2012) het in haar hoofd haalt een aantal van die japonnen 'gewoon' te dragen, niet alleen bij een feestelijke gelegenheid, maar ook op theevisite bij een buurvrouw. Los daarvan wordt diverse malen gerept van de bijzonder smalle tailleomvang (soms nog geen 50 centimeter) van de mannequins in de jaren direct na de oorlog, mede a.g.v. de honger en het voedselgebrek. Hoe is het mogelijk dat de bijna 40-jarige Kat na twee zwangerschappen (ze heeft twee dochtertjes van drie en vijf jaar oud) in dergelijke haute couture-japonnen van de jaren '50 past?
O ja, en ik vind de vertaling van de titel slecht gekozen.

This was my first Natasha Lester book but I’m sure it won’t be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful story set against the backdrop of WW II. Yes, it’s another WW II historical fiction but it’s a well-crafted story of family secrets, courage, love, and betrayal that will keep you turning the pages.
The story flows primarily between two points of view, Skye Penrose in the past and Kat Jourdan in the present day. Skye is a female pilot shuttling planes across England for the RAF, and Kat is a divorced mother of two and fashion conservator. When Kat discovers dozens of historic Christian Dior creations at her grandmothers old English cottage, she begins to question everything she has known growing up. The two narratives quickly drew me in, and as the story progresses we hear from other characters and follow their story arcs as well.
I love that the story was inspired by Dior’s sister, Catherine, who was part of the French Resistance during the war. And while I was not completely surprised at the end, it was a nice twist and heartfelt conclusion that may have had me reaching for a tissue (or two).
This is another solid 5-star historical fiction story that I highly recommend.

All I can say is wow. A stunner, absolute stunner. I have only cried during two books and the ending of this one had my throat tightening. Wow, just wow.
