Solid book and I liked the main character a lot. Not as much romance as I'd hope in this first book, but I'm guessing it gets more in the later book.
I need to pick up the next one because I heard this series is good.

3.5 stars. Leila is fun and I like her humor, but her enjoyment of horrifying everyone seems a bit over dramatized. She reads like a character in a book rather than a real person.

I wanna give this four stars, if for no other reason but the fact that I managed to read it. (I sort of dnf'ed like three books before I finally settled on this one, so the fact that it had a grip on me straight from chapter 1 was like a gift from the heavens) However, I can't do that. The book isn't bad, but- i don't know how to explain it. It might have been the main character's first person voice narration? Sounded like something middle school me would like, but not adult me. At times it was cringey. A feeling I never want to experience while reading a book.
Anyhow, in the book's defense, I wasn't in the best mindset while reading it, so I don't know. The biggest proof is the fact that I did not realize that her name was literally night until page 111 when king solis was introduced and i thought "can you make the names any more obvious?" and then it fucking hit me. Her name is literally night in my native language how absent minded do I have to be to not fucking notice that?

I loved this book. It stayed in my thoughts even when I had to do other things. I look forward to reading the next book.

this is for the entire trilogy
So I loved these books and after finishing them on KU I am so going to buy them. The world is built upon from other books in the magiford world, and Leila is exactly what the few need. The characters are wonderful. I have read other trilogies in the world and loved these as much. Though I do have to say Rigel is my least favorite male love interest. Killian and Noctus were so much more interesting and better. But Leila more than makes up for his lack and I love her so entirely. I am glad she gets a happy ending.

4.5 stars. another awesome KM Shea book! i can always trust her books to get me out of a reading slump.
i really love her first-person-pov books. this is really similar in tone to the [b:Magic Forged|51804106|Magic Forged (Hall of Blood and Mercy, #1)|K.M. Shea|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1582747084l/51804106._SY75_.jpg|76315029] series and it's a sort of spin-off series about one of the side characters that appeared in Hazel's trilogy, although you don't need to read the first series to read this.
it has the usual things i love about KM Shea's writing: feel-good, funny and lighthearted, an endearing and very likeable protagonist and fast-paced adventure. overall: really fun to read!
now i'm off to devour the second book.
