Well deserved of the Newbery Medal, the first for a graphic novel. No matter your age, you should read this well written and illustrated story of fitting in, finding out who you are, understanding the role race can play in how we see one another, and remembering how difficult it is to navigate middle school. This will be a classic, that adults should read, as well as children.

I’ve wanted to read this for awhile and I have no idea what took me so long. I think I kept getting this and Hey, Kiddo mixed up? Both deal with difficult topics and have received great reviews and rewards so I probably need to read it too! I really appreciate how all of the topics were handled in this. Sometimes it seemed like the only focus was on the relationships and judgments of others, but when you think about it, that’s kind of all you think about in middle school in a way. While we had just one protagonist, we got to look into the lives of so many people and see how their experiences were a lot of the causes for their behaviors. I think it’s especially great for the target audience, but adults would learn and appreciate it just as much. I’m glad I finally read it!

I read this book for my literature for youth class. I was really surprised by how much I related to and enjoyed this story. This book is about Jordan starting middle school at a predominantly white private school while being the new kid. I have the new kid many times in my life, and the schools I have gone to were all private, so I know exactly how Jordan felt. I like how the story dealt with navigating not only new classmates but also new teachers. After enjoying this story so much, I will definitely be checking out the second book.

I just joined a big new organization shy of a month now, so I'm kind of a new kid in a new environment, and although I'm old enough to be Jordan's mom, I can empathize with him. Love to see how friendship found him after everything he went through.

Wonderful book about being different, fitting in, empathy, kindness, making new friends (while keeping the old ones), adjusting to a new situation, and perseverance.

Middle grade is an area I don't super love, but I can get behind many of the messages in this book. As a white woman, it's interesting to hear the diverse perspectives of a teenage boy (a population I serve at my library).

Discussing this book today with my book club was awesome. Graphic novels are just so accessible! With kids/teens who are already overloaded, this is bite-sized and yet there's so much content here. I wish more parents were okay with graphic novels. I look forward to what my other middle school book club thinks of this.
