I'm still not sold on this series. It's competently written and plotted, but weirdly slow paced. I like Elizabeth and I even can get on board with Gideon's holier-than-thou ways, but something is not working for me.

Yay, this series passed the second book test! I loved this one as much as the first. Elizabeth is such an endearing character as she seems realistic yet like so many flawed heroines. Being raised as a con artist, she finds it hard to be completely good. Yet, she has a good heart and does want to help people who are suffering. For me a good series not only has a good romance story (which this does) but also that there is a solid friendship. In this series, Elizabeth has more than a friend but there are some fun secondary characters (friends and foes). If you have not tried this series, I highly recommend the first novel. As each book can be read as standalone for the story, the background info from the first book really make the characters realistic.

I enjoyed this book much better than the first book in the author's new series.

this was so good! i love elizabeth and gideon so much more after this book. even though their relationship progressed pretty fast in city of lies, i appreciate how thompson showed them figuring out how that relationship would actually work.
